Surveillance cameras, including those that can be connected via remote access – devices that can be connected remotely to view recordings or live broadcasts from anywhere with an Internet connection.!
The devices are used for installation in offices to control personnel, to protect industrial facilities (residential buildings, summer cottages, apartments), in Smart Home systems, to organize video surveillance in an apartment building, to monitor the actions of a nanny, as well as in production, when you need to watch the process.
Below we will consider what types of video surveillance cameras with remote access exist, talk about supported standards and protocols, and consider data transfer options.
We will pay special attention to the selection criteria and connection options. Here is a rating of popular models available on the Russian market.
Types of cameras that can be used for video surveillance
Today, many types of cameras used for organizing video surveillance have been created and are being used. They differ in type, features of observation, degree of protection and fastening.
Web and IP cameras
By type of connection, the following options are distinguished:
- WEB-camera – connects directly to a PC or laptop. More often used for switching between users and transferring images to the computer screen (the one to which it is connected). These types of devices are not designed to broadcast information on the Internet, but theoretically it is possible. The cost of WEB-cameras is from 20 dollars and more.
- An IP camera is a complex device that includes a network interface, the ability to connect to the Web, a Web interface, and the convenience of switching to the Internet. It is used for video surveillance with remote access, protection, control. Optionally, you can view video from IP cameras from different PCs connected to the Internet. The cost is from 200-300 dollars and above.
IP cameras are more functional devices, the installation of which is best entrusted to specialists. The nuances of such devices include the possibility of round-the-clock and battery life, easy remote access, high resolution and image quality.
Digital and analog
Conventionally, all video surveillance cameras that can be used for remote access are divided into two categories – analog (obsolete type) and digital.
Let’s take a quick look at their features:
- Analog – video cameras in which the “picture” is received in analog form, and subsequently converted to digital format directly in the device. Further, to transfer information, another conversion into an analog (composite / CVBS) signal takes place. Information is sent via a coaxial cable to the display (if necessary), and then to the DVR. The latter converts the image into a “digit”, encodes and compresses the information.
- Digital – cameras where the received signal is sent in digitized form. It is compressed and encoded (for IP devices) or transmitted in full (for HD-SDI) before being sent.
Analog cameras have a low price, are easy to connect and set up, have good image quality, no delays / losses.
Of the minuses – poor scalability, lack of signal protection, the need for additional cables, etc.
For these and a number of other reasons, surveillance cameras operating on the analog principle are gradually “dying out” and being replaced by digital IP devices. The latter guarantee a picture in higher resolution and with better detail.
According to the features of observation
All video cameras are divided into several categories according to the features of observation.
Consider the options:
- Open. They are mounted on ceilings/walls and are visible to the people being monitored. They may differ in shape, signal type, installation features and other factors. They are distinguished by good recording quality, a large selection of additional functions and the possibility of a set of options for outdoor or indoor installation.
- Hidden. These cameras are hidden from view and are designed for covert video surveillance. The camera can be hidden in the interior, for example, mounted in a wall / ceiling. When installing such devices, legal issues must be taken into account. The disadvantages of hidden cameras include a low level of visibility, poor light sensitivity, no psychological effect, and the likelihood of falling under some of the articles of the law.
- For home. Such models are designed for shooting indoors, most often heated. They are poorly protected from moisture, but have a more affordable price. Video cameras for home with and without remote access seem to be a large selection of models, with different functionality, shape and installation features.
By degree of protection
Conventionally, video cameras are classified according to the degree of protection into several groups:
- outdoor – for outdoor shooting;
- internal (with a diaphragm) – installed inside the room;
- simple – mounted for observation in a private area;
- anti-vandal – mounted in crowded places;
- internal – used for installation in apartments / houses with heating.
By design features
Surveillance cameras can be conditionally divided according to the nuances of the design.
Here are the following options:
- Swivel – are distinguished by the presence of a rotary mechanism that directs the viewfinder to the desired area. For most devices, this angle is 360 degrees, which provides maximum coverage.
- Dome – located inside the hemisphere. In other words, the main mechanisms are protected by a thin wall.
- Panoramic. They are used in spacious rooms to cover the entire area.
Each type of CCTV camera has its own features and benefits. We will dwell on them in more detail below.

What is the ONVIF protocol
In 2008, video surveillance companies such as AXIS, Bosch, and Sony set up a forum to ensure compatibility between different IP products. It was called ONVIF, which in its full version means Open Network Video Interface Forum.
Since then, there has been an organization that accepts members from various manufacturers of surveillance cameras and related equipment. In 2020, the organization has about 500 members.
Subsequently, ONVIF profiles appeared, which are used by many companies and support over 11 surveillance systems.
Depending on the level of membership – “Full”, “User” or “Observer”, the organization can participate in the work, use specifications or apply methods for testing hardware products. The amount of contributions also varies and ranges from $500 to $10.
The ONVIF protocol is a product of a group of companies that describes the principles for integrating equipment with flow display / processing programs. The functionality of the protocol is the same as that of the API included in the developer’s software.
Key features:
- defining authentication methods;
- requesting video streams;
- change of IP address;
- receiving/sending events, etc.
Unlike the API, the ONVIF protocol is supported by many development companies.
In simple words, ONVIF support provides a guarantee to the buyer that the equipment of one manufacturer will be compatible with the software of another company.
Thanks to such a system, it is easier for buyers to decide on the equipment and organize a video surveillance system.
Can webcams be used for video surveillance with remote access
Using Web cameras for remote video surveillance is the easiest and most affordable way. Especially if the device is already available.
But such a solution is repelled by a number of disadvantages:
- The computer, laptop, or other device that the camera is connected to must always be turned on.
- The picture quality leaves much to be desired.
- The distance from the webcam to the PC / laptop cannot exceed two to three meters. Otherwise, an amplifier may be required.
- Difficulties in setting up a PC and router to control information from a webcam.
- The need to install and configure software to create an archive.
Creating video surveillance with remote access using a webcam is possible, but this method is not very convenient and is only suitable as a temporary solution.
Criteria for choosing CCTV cameras
When choosing such devices, it is necessary to understand what criteria to pay attention to when choosing equipment. Above, we have already considered such parameters as standards and types of video cameras.
First, a few words about the basic parameters:
- Manufacturer. There are more than 30 companies on the surveillance camera market, and most of them have production in China. Therefore, the country of the brand is not a criterion that should be paid close attention to.
- The number of megapixels. Depending on the requirements, it is necessary to choose cameras with a quantity from 1 to 16 or more megapixels.
- Maximum resolution. The next most important parameter is the video resolution, because the image quality depends on it. You can choose from more than 10 camera options with resolutions from 640×480 to 3840×2160.
- The presence of IR-illumination and night mode.
- Supported standards. There are devices on the market that support ONVIF, RTSP, Wi-Fi 2,4 and 5,0 GHz, 802.11 ab / g / n.
- Sensors. To increase the effectiveness of video surveillance cameras can be equipped with motion, sound or light sensors.
- Wireless connection. When choosing, pay attention to the support of the following channels – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, 4G LTE or GSM.
- Lens. Modern models of video cameras are equipped with different lenses: fisheye, fixed focus, interchangeable, Zoom. Some devices are sold without a lens at all.
- Viewing angle. This setting ranges from 22 to 365 degrees.
- Diaphragm. Models with apertures from f/1 to f/114 are available to choose from.
- Protection class. Characterizes the degree of protection of the device from weather conditions. Available devices from IP21 to IP67.
- Codec support: H.264, MJPEG, H.264, H.265, H.265, MJPEG.
- Frame rate at maximum resolution.
- Installation location: wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, combined, concealed,
- Additional functions / features.
When choosing a CCTV camera with remote access, pay attention to all the above (and below) characteristics. At the same time, be guided by the requirements, installation features, application principles and other features. Some of them will be discussed in more detail below.
Producing countries
As noted above, the CCTV camera market offers a wide range of equipment. Among the most demanded companies are Acti, TP-Link, D-link, Axis, Dahua, Balter, Hanwha, Sony, Bosch, Cisco, Hikvision, Longse, Planet, Milesight, UNV, Panasonic, Samsung, Tenda, Ubiquiti, Vision and others.
Most of the production lines are located in China, so choosing by brand does not give accurate results. To avoid mistakes, it is better to select a model based on reviews. They make it easier to understand whether the manufacturer can be trusted, how high the quality of the product is, and what functions buyers can count on.
Signal transmission method
Surveillance cameras with remote access differ in the way the signal is transmitted.
Available options:
- wired;
- wireless;
- hybrid.
Wireless options involve the use of 3G / 4G or Wi-Fi technologies. In the case of the wired version, a physical connection of the device is required.
Best of all, if the camcorder is a hybrid type, that is, it supports wired and wireless connections.
Maximum resolution
When buying a camera for video surveillance, it is important to consider the resolution of the device, because the image quality depends on it. But there is a nuance. The higher the parameter, the more space the video takes up, and the more serious the requirements for Internet speed.
In addition, information is recorded on a hard disk, memory card or cloud storage, so there are additional requirements for their size, despite the fact that the video signal may be compressed.
The main formats include:
- VGA – resolution 640×480 pixels, 0.3 MP;
- HD – high resolution with 1280×960 pixels, 1.3 MP;
- Full HD – full HD, has a resolution of 1920×1080, 2.0 MP;
- Ultra HD – 4K or 8K with a resolution of 3840×2160 or 7680×4320, respectively.
The full list of resolutions includes more than 15 options ranging between VGA and 8K. At the same time, the price directly depends on the quality.
Functions and other features
Depending on the model, the device may be equipped with the following devices:
- IR filter;
- WDR support;
- memory card slot;
- noise suppression;
- built-in microphone / speaker;
- face recognition;
- thermal imager;
- video recorder option;
- PoE support (we’ll tell you what it is later) and others.
Availability of sensors
When choosing CCTV cameras with remote access, pay attention to the presence of sensors.
Available options:
- Movement. The camcorder turns on when an object is detected in its coverage area.
- Illumination. Depending on the tasks set, the camera can only shoot during the day or at night. The process will start the light sensor installed near the device.
- Sound. The device reacts to the appearance of sound, after which it turns on or off depending on the circumstances.
Protection class
When buying, it is important to pay attention to the numbers after the IP, which indicate the degree of protection against solid particles (first digit) and against water (second digit). The higher the number, the higher the degree of protection.
Other numbers can be used in the designation:
- W – protection from bad weather;
- M – test for protection against water;
- H – high voltage equipment, etc.
In shock-resistant devices, another indicator of protection is provided – IK. After the specified designation, the following numbers are indicated from 00 to 10, where 00 is no protection, and 10 is maximum security. The higher the degree of protection, the better it withstands mechanical stress.
Surveillance cameras with IK10 and IP 68 are considered the most secure. At the same time, the following options are most often found on sale:
- I: 07, 08, 103.
- IP: 42, 51, 52, 54, 55, 65, 66, 67, 68.
Focal length, optical zoom and resolution
The quality of the video largely depends on the characteristics of the purchased equipment, and here it is important to pay attention to the following parameters:
- Focal length. This parameter is presented by the manufacturer as a specific range. In devices with a minimum parameter, a focal length of up to 2,5 mm is indicated. The maximum parameter that can be found is 330 mm. The indicator is taken into account when calculating the coverage area of the device.
- Optical zoom. A characteristic that indicates the possibility of approaching an object a certain number of times. There are security cameras on the market without such a zoom and with a magnification of up to 4x, 10x, 20x or more. The higher the multiplicity, the greater the resolution of the image should be, because otherwise there is no point in approximation.
- Permission. When choosing a model, you can give preference to devices with a resolution of up to 2, 4 or 10 MP. Devices from 10 MP and more are allocated in a separate category.
Support for WDR technology
WDR technology allows you to see dark and light areas in the video at the same time. This option is indispensable in a situation where shooting is carried out with a contrast of these tones, for example, the camera is aimed at the rising or setting sun.
The WDR option allows you to see objects that are overexposed or in shadow.
WDR is of two types:
- digital DWDR – the result is achieved through the work of the program;
- hardware – achieved by creating pictures with different exposures.
Camcorders with digital DWDR cost less due to low processing efficiency.
For a relatively small surcharge, you can get a camera with an extended dynamic range due to software processing.
The presence of such an option, like WDR, allows you to see light and dark areas in the video. At the same time, the reliability of the color palette and the contrast of the picture are preserved.
P2P cameras
In today’s market, you can buy so-called P2P cameras. Their peculiarity is the presence of software that allows you to identify the device and connect to the product remotely using a personal ID number. Such devices are designed to connect to them remotely.
The principle of operation is as follows:
- Connecting the P2P camera to the Internet using a router or 3G.
- Sending a request to a remote server to identify the device by ID number.
- Installing a program on a PC / laptop to watch videos (usually provided by the hardware developer).
- Indicating the ID number or photographing the QR.
- View content online.
- View video archive from SD card.
- Rotary device control.
The role of intermediary equipment is played by a server that combines the user’s device and the camera.
The P2P camera is designed to simplify the setup of work, because without the use of new technology, you need to have special skills to connect. Here, it takes no more than 10 minutes to set up and connect.
Such cameras are used to monitor the house / apartment / pets, business monitoring, monitoring sick people, etc.
Support for smart home ecosystems
Depending on the model, the device may be suitable for smart home systems: Ezviz, Rubetec, Rostelecom, Xiaomi Mi Home, Tutya Smart and Yandex Smart Home.
This simplifies the integration of the video camera into the systems described above.
Software support: popular software in the market
Customers have at their disposal a large selection of software that increases the effectiveness of video surveillance and expands its functionality.
The most popular programs include:
- Xeoma is a surveillance software that runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iOS. The program has an advanced interface and great features. Features of night vision cameras
Video cameras for night shooting in form, parameters and options differ little from simple devices. Their feature is a higher sensitivity, thanks to the built-in infrared illumination.
Many modern cameras are equipped with IR equipment, which allows you to shoot even in the dark.
At the same time, a good camera should be able to:
- change color modes to black and white;
- have ICR filters;
- complemented by powerful IR illumination;
- equipped with a sensor to recognize the level of illumination.
When buying night video surveillance cameras, it is important to take into account the range and angle of illumination, as well as the service life of 20 to 50 thousand hours. The equipment is often used to protect any structures: shops, warehouses, garages and other facilities.
As for the IR illumination distance, it differs in different models and ranges from 1-2 to 100 meters or more. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account the type of protected object, its area and customer requirements.
Features of GPS CCTV Cameras
GSM video surveillance camera is a device that uses the GSM standard and installs a SIM card. Unlike other devices, the camera is capable of sending SMS messages and making calls to a programmed mobile device.
The capabilities of the video camera also allow you to send photos or videos to the customer’s e-mail or directly to the server.
The GSM video camera is installed in places where it is necessary to control the object for the fact of the appearance of intruders. If necessary, several such devices can be installed to eliminate “dead zones”.
Work is carried out during the dark and daylight hours. In the first case, IR illumination works, which allows you to see the faces of intruders. In the event of a power outage, the device is powered by batteries.
Purpose:
- control of remote objects;
- installation on vehicles to protect against theft;
- installation in places of a large number of people for a quick response to a change in the situation;
- supervision of children and the elderly.

- industrial facilities, etc.
Why Choose IP Cameras for Remote Access Surveillance
The practice of application has shown that for organizing surveillance with remote access, preference should be given to IP cameras.
This is due to several advantages:
- high definition picture;
- stable image quality;
- minimal interference;
- a wide range of options: digital and hardware;
- remote control functionality;
- high data transfer rate;
- maintaining clarity during signal transmission;
- protection of information using special encoding options.
The advantages of IP video cameras include a number of other useful features.
Let’s take a quick look at their features:
- Analytics: number / face recognition, behavior analysis / changes in the frame.
- Compression. Unlike conventional models, information from an IP camera is compressed to reduce the load on the server without losing quality. The most popular codecs are JPEG for photos, MJPEG, H.264, H.265 for video.
- corridor mode. Many IP cameras support corridor mode and vertical video display in 9:16 format instead of 16:9. This mode allows you to watch video in the format of a tunnel or corridor. IP camera specification mode is supported.
- Edge Storage – local data storage with the ability to record video on the built-in storage. At the same time, the IP camera works autonomously without connecting to a computer or a registrar.
- Audio. IP cameras are usually equipped with a large number of audio inputs and outputs. Devices can be built-in or connected separately.
- Broadcast to two or more streams. Many IP cameras support three streams of data sent to the monitor, smartphone, and recording.
Features of connecting video cameras
The methods for connecting a home security camera with remote access are selected depending on its type, model, supported interface, and specifications. The main ones are: via coaxial cable, twisted pair, Wi-Wi.
Coaxial cable
A type of electrical cable consisting of a central wire and a metal braid, between which a dielectric material is provided. On the outside there is another shell.
Structurally, it can be thin with a diameter of up to 5 mm and thick (about 1 cm). The second option is classic and is used more often due to better protection from noise.
As noted above, the type of cable when connecting a video surveillance system depends on the system used.
For example, when using AHD or CCTV technology, HD-SDI high-definition cameras are used, which allows you to count on high image quality.
The use of such a cable is possible due to the following advantages:
- minimal signal loss;
- wide bandwidth.
A thin coaxial cable is used when connecting CCTV cameras at a distance of up to 190 m, and a thick one (10-12 mm) – up to 0,5 km.
Criteria for choosing a coaxial cable:
- Type. There are several options to choose from – RG-59, RG-6 or 3C2V.
- Weather resistance.
- Cross section and material of additional conductors.
- Screen density (30, 40, 60, or 90 percent).
- Core and braid material: copper or bimetal.
It is recommended to choose a coaxial cable taking into account the installation conditions: distance, installation location, etc.
If possible, a combination cable can be used. It consists of a coaxial cable containing a pair or two pairs of additional wires. They are used to supply voltage to the video camera and transmit control signals.
Twisted pair
For IP video cameras, only twisted pair is used, which is a cable with four or eight wires twisted together and in one sheath.
Twisted pair is of two types:
- UTP – a budget option without a protective screen;
- STP – has a protective screen and foil braid.
Twisted pair can be used at a distance of up to 3000 m, but in this case it is necessary to install intermediate amplifiers. At the same time, this type of connection is highly functional, because it can transmit sound and video, while connecting power via the Ethernet port in parallel.
In addition, using a twisted pair cable, you can connect the IP video camera directly to the registrar, router, computer or other equipment.
When laying twisted pair in the ground, it is recommended to use pipes made of plastic / metal. Such protection excludes damage to wires by mice or underground inputs.
When choosing an air gasket, the use of a steel cable is required, which provides better tension and protects the twisted pair from damage.
And remember: black twisted pair is used for outdoor installation, gray – for indoors.
What is the IP camera connected to?
The IP camera is connected to the following components:
- server (registrar);
- PC with the necessary software;
- cloud (if available).
When using two or more IP devices, the connection is made through a router, switch, or a separate port. But this is a topic for a separate article.
When connecting IP equipment to a computer / laptop, it depends on the number of devices. For one camera, the connection is made through the LAN connector of the network card. If there are several devices, through a switch to which IP cameras are already connected.
Features of connecting via the Internet, Wi-Fi
In many cases, the following connection methods are used – via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Each option has features:
- Through the WiFi connector. After connecting the camera to the Ethernet connector, you must enter the interface using the IP address of the equipment (indicated in the documentation for the router). In the next step, go to the Wi-Fi settings, activate the wireless network and enter the login information. On the following connections, the device connects to WiFi automatically. With WPS technology support, press and hold the special key on the camera to connect automatically. For connection, manual entry of the PIN code (indicated on the box or in the documentation) can also be used.
- via ethernet. Unlike the previous version, a twisted pair with RJ-45 connectors at the ends is used for connection. The length of the wire can be changed depending on the situation to make the connection more accurate. When installing up to five cameras, one router is enough, but for more devices, a switch is needed.
Power supplies for CCTV cameras
When connecting video cameras for surveillance, several types of voltage (U) are used.
Let’s highlight the main ones:
- Constant U at 12 or 24 V.
- Variable U – 220 V.
The advantage of a constant current source is the safety in terms of protection against undervoltage. As a rule, power supplies, including multichannel ones, are used to power surveillance systems. In the latter case, the cameras receive individual power through a dedicated line, thanks to special schematic solutions.
PoE technology is of particular interest. Its peculiarity is the power supply of video cameras and other devices with constant voltage using the same cable through which information is transmitted. The supply voltage is 48 V, and the power is 15,4 or 25.5 watts.
The use of this technology allows you to maintain the quality of the video at a high level.
There are several reasons for this:
- Electricity goes through wires that do not participate in the exchange of data.
- When transmitting data and voltage over a single cable, RF transformers are used.
The use of PoE simplifies the installation of remote access surveillance cameras and saves space in boxes. Most of the devices require only one cable to connect, which saves money on cabling and PSU installation.
The advantage is that you can use the same infrastructure to connect using PoE technology. Of the minuses – high price, high power consumption, which often requires infrastructure optimization.
