There are also manual citrus juicers available. Using them is even easier than using electric ones: you press the half of the fruit onto the cone and rotate it with your hand. The juice flows down the grooves into the container. Manual juicers are handy when you need to quickly squeeze out a small amount of juice.
Centrifugal juicers
Centrifugal juicers are versatile devices that can be used to juice apples, pears, carrots and many other types of fruits and vegetables. The raw material is crushed with a grater disc and enters the separator, where the juice is separated from the pulp.
The separation efficiency and ease of cleaning depend on the design of the separator. The cylindrical separator gives a very high juice yield (up to 80%), but the pulp remains inside, and after two or three glasses the device must be stopped and cleaned. The conical separator allows you to throw the cake into the waste container, but the juice is not more than 60%.
The power of centrifugal juicers varies widely – from 200 to 1500 watts. Low-powered devices will not be able to juice hard vegetables and fruits and will quickly overheat during operation. It makes sense to choose high-power devices if you plan to frequently process large quantities of fruits. Average values (800–1000 W) are usually sufficient.
An important point when choosing a universal juicer is the presence of a speed switch. For hard vegetables and fruits, the rotation speed should be higher, for soft – lower. The most advanced modern devices provide a stepless speed control, which allows you to adapt to almost any raw material.
Pay attention to the size of the feed hole. If it is large, then even large fruits can be loaded whole without wasting time slicing them. It is also desirable to have a wide receiving tray on which all prepared products can be placed.
The motors of centrifugal juicers rotate at a high speed (from 5000 to 20000 rpm), so the finished juice foams a lot. If you want to get a clear drink without foam and pulp, choose a device in which the receiving container for juice is equipped with a special filter-skimmer.
Auger juicers
Screw juicers, unlike centrifugal ones, operate at low speeds (40–110 rpm). The rotating auger gradually and gently pushes the fruit through the net. The raw material is not heated or oxidized, the so-called “cold pressing” takes place. The juice turns out to be very rich, retains a maximum of useful substances, does not foam and does not exfoliate.
