How to choose a good white wine, focusing only on the inscriptions on the label: I share my experience

My brother works at a winery in the south. He rarely comes on vacation, after all, he is several thousand kilometers from his parents’ house.

But that year, he finally got out to his native land. Naturally, a grandiose family feast was expected. Parents, out of old memory, sent us – children – to the store for food and alcohol.

white wine production technology

Naturally, we decided to take wine. While walking to the supermarket, we talked with my brother. I am a very curious person by nature, and the topic of alcohol is very close to me. I was wondering how we produce wine in general.

My brother could already be called an expert in this field, so on the way he explained everything to me in a nutshell.

First, of course, grapes are harvested, which are carefully selected. The berries are placed under a press to squeeze the juice, which is then filtered so that the skin and seeds do not get into the fermentation tank. This is the main difference in the production of red and white wine. When making red wine, the skin ferments along with the juice.

The wine is left to infuse for some time. Each variety has its own time limit. Basically, it does not exceed 2-3 years. Then the resulting wine is again filtered and bottled.

In production.

The brother grinned, obviously remembering something of his own, and said that now he described the most general technology. If you delve into the technical details, then he will talk about alcohol all his vacation. Naturally, he did not want to do this.

Note! Many believe that white and red wine are made from different grape varieties. This is a common misconception. In fact, the difference in color is obtained due to the presence or absence of contact of the juice with the pulp (bone and peel). By itself, grape juice is almost colorless.

Which country to prefer when choosing white wine

“Listen,” I asked a relative. “Here you are working at a Russian winery. We have good wines, no one argues with that. Well, if you pay attention to foreign manufacturers, which country would you prefer?”

The brother thought about it and said that, in his opinion, the best white wines are produced in Italy, France and Spain, although Russian alcohol is also ready to take high positions in the world market.

Well, from a more affordable wine, my brother preferred Moldavian. Its price is low, but the quality does not suffer from this at all.

Note! Good wine, according to my brother, is also produced in Greece and America.

What to look for when choosing white wine in a store

I asked this question to my brother when we already went to the supermarket. He replied that the first thing to look at is the production date. White wines are best chosen from those that are not older than two years.

Unlike reds, they do not need to insist at all. It happens to be the most delicious in the first year or two after production. Of course, we are not talking about collectible alcohol here.

Dry wines are preferred over other types due to their low sugar content. You should also pay attention to the grape variety from which the alcohol is made. Recognized as the best:

  • chardonnay;
  • sauvignon;
  • merlot;
  • risling;
  • Pinot Grigio.

A lot can be said about wine and its strength. If the indicator exceeds 16%, most likely, the alcohol is fortified artificially, and not naturally.

It is good if the label contains information about this or the corresponding marking that it is port wine, sherry or vermouth. Otherwise, it may be the usual “babble” that I would not take even if I were paid extra.

You should also not take wine in bags. You will run into either a fake or the remnants of a factory production.

The choice is huge.

“Well, how about the price?” I asked. “Cheap quality wine, probably, does not happen?” The brother smiled. “Price is a controversial issue. You can find good alcohol for 250 rubles, or you can be disappointed in a drink for a couple of hundred dollars. Here, as luck would have it.”

Important! When choosing a wine, pay attention to the label. A large amount of information about the product allows you to judge its quality. If there are practically no inscriptions on the bottle, most likely there is a fake or low-quality alcohol on the counter.

The best brands of white wines that you can buy in modern city stores

“Well, what about the winemaker, what will we take in the end?” I asked my brother when we finally got to the alcohol section. A relative looked at the assortment and offered me a choice of several bottles, giving a brief description of each of them.

  1. Chateau Taman. Our Russian wine is slightly sour with a bright aroma of ripe fruit. It has a long, pleasant aftertaste. Price 571 rubles. for a bottle of 0,75 liters. Produced on the Taman Peninsula.
  2. Fanagoria Cru Leromont Chardonnay. Transparent light-straw wine with citrus taste and sweetish aroma. Harmonious, memorable aftertaste makes a positive impression. It is also produced in Taman. The price is 555 rubles for 0,75 liters.
  3. Old Crimea Sauvignon Sauvage. Golden yellow wine with bright, slightly sour taste and intense fresh aroma. Medium long aftertaste. Produced, as the name implies, in the Crimea. The price is 412 rubles for 0,75 liters.

My brother and I landed in a department where there was exclusively Russian-made wine, however, it did not disappoint us. I then used the advice given to me by my brother for many years during a trip to the store. Can you add anything to them?
