How to choose a fragrance for your home

Having realized during the pandemic how well-chosen aroma in the apartment helps to cope with stress and blues, we have become much pickier in choosing fragrant accessories for the right atmosphere.

Immersed in the Internet and spending quarantine time within four walls, we began to perceive our homes differently. Everyone tried to brighten up this seemingly endless apartment life in their own way. Online training, culinary experiments, because of which many went out “into people” with a few extra pounds. As well as reading, TV shows, activities with children – you can’t count everything.

But, as it turned out, many were able to rediscover all kinds of aroma accessories for the home, online sales of which have increased significantly during quarantine. The ability of these funds to relieve tension, stress, and just brighten up life turned out to be most welcome. That is why, even after coming out of isolation, most of us have remained faithful to our domestic “aroma pets”, realizing that they are able to make life not only fragrant, but also more measured, calm, spiritual.

“As soon as I crossed the threshold of the apartment, undressed and kissed the children, I strike a match over the wick of a candle. Everything! I’m home. Work, reports, traffic jams remained beyond the threshold. In a fragrant flame, all the complexities of the past day seem to burn down, ”says Alina, director of the marketing department of a large fashion company.

There are a lot of home “aromaniacs” like her. The benefit of funds to create a fragrant atmosphere is more than enough! Candles, diffusers, sachets, smokers, home perfumes – we buy them, receive them as gifts, give them ourselves and use them with pleasure. Fragrances have become a part of the interior, a stylish present, an actual hobby and an endless topic for discussion.

Originally from childhood

An elegant home should now smell fragrant, and the smell should match the interior. Moreover, the fleur in the living room a la Louis XV is fundamentally different from the smell of a French-style chalet or high-tech apartment. It comes to the point that aromatherapists, aromapsychologists and even eminent perfumers are invited to create the perfect home scent. But these are, of course, extremes. Most of us prefer to use ready-made products.

How to choose the right one? Perfume expert Natalya Onufrieva considers the most relaxing smells that delighted us in childhood: vanilla cakes, chocolates, apple pie with cinnamon, salty sea spray … Fill the whole house with them. But for the bedroom, choose a different composition that will allow you to separate this purely personal room from outsiders. Notes of jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang and other “flowers of passion” will ideally merge into a romantic night.

Remember the best

If an unpleasant event occurs in the house, it is better to immediately change its aroma. Associative olfactory memory will thank you for this. And it will be much easier to survive a stressful situation in a new home flair.

Try in principle to avoid sharp, disturbing smells – citrus, menthol, coniferous. Not only will they not let you relax, but also, associating with household chemicals and air fresheners in the toilet, they will subconsciously annoy and provoke conflicts. An exception here may be the New Year holidays, which are strongly associated with the smell of pine needles and tangerines. That is why many brands on the eve of Christmas release limited aroma line with these ingredients in the composition.

And the last. In order for aromas to please you longer, follow a few rules. Try not to blow out the candles. A sharp stream of air can tilt or bend the wick, the candle will burn unevenly, which will shorten its life. Extinguish it by covering it with the supplied lid or saucer. Also keep the candles closed between uses so that the volatile aroma molecules do not evaporate in vain. Be sure to remove carbon deposits from the wick and make sure that its particles do not fall into the melted wax.

In diffusers, regularly, every couple of weeks, change porous sticks, which can be purchased separately. Their air cells become clogged over time, and the aroma stops spreading evenly. When it comes to essential oils for lamps, don’t go overboard with the concentration. Five to seven drops are enough to create a comfortable atmosphere in a twenty-meter room. After all, the ideal aroma should soar invisibly, and not suffocate the household.
