Proper organization of the student’s workplace is a guarantee of the health and well-being of the child, his high productivity and even academic success.
Particular attention should be paid to the choice of a chair in which the student will spend several hours a day doing homework or playing on the computer. What requirements should such furniture meet:
Comfort and convenience. The height, depth, size and shape of the seat, backrest must correspond to the anatomical features of the student, maintain the physiologically correct position of all parts of the body, not hinder movement, and not interfere with normal blood circulation.
Reliability and strength. If the frame of the product is made of steel or aluminum, the risk of breakage is reduced, and its service life is increased. It is less likely that it will break while a child is sitting on it, which means that the risk of injury is reduced. Furniture, the frame of which is made of durable wood, is also suitable for students – this is a classic of the genre that does not lose its relevance.
Number of support points. Standard products for students have four legs, but there are models equipped with five legs. The latter option is more stable.
The presence of a built-in footrest. This is not a mandatory element, but if it is, it is good, since the footrest gives the seated person the opportunity to change the position of the legs and body, change posture and relax.
Availability and quality of wheels – it is these elements that most often fail, making further operation of the product impossible. Experts recommend buying options for children without wheels, as the ability to ride will distract from classes. On the other hand, there are models on sale whose wheels can be blocked with a mechanical lock.
Safety of materials of manufacture and coating. The school chair must be made from environmentally friendly, non-allergic raw materials. The same applies to varnishes, paints, they must have a quality certificate. The upholstery of the product, if present, must be made of natural or synthetic fabric, which is well breathable and absorbs moisture. For example, cotton, linen, polyamide. But leather or eco-leather upholstery is not the best option for school furniture, especially if it is actively used in the summer.
Practicality and ease of maintenance. Children often leave stains on the surface of furniture that are difficult to get rid of. Therefore, the school chair should be easy to clean, including with the use of detergents. Also, when buying, it is advisable to take care of a cover that can be washed.
Aesthetic characteristics. It is good if the child will like the model, if its design and color will fit the general style of the children’s room.
If you want your child to use the purchase for several years, it is better to give preference to a model that is adjustable in height. Children grow up quickly, furniture should “grow” with them. Only in this case, the health of the student will not suffer, he will not have problems with his posture.
How to choose a product for the growth of a child
The height of the chair, or rather the level of its seat, is one of the main parameters that influence the choice. Consider the standards for the size of furniture, depending on the growth of the one who will use it:
For a student whose height is 90 cm, a 22 cm chair and a 40 cm high desk or table are suitable.
For a student whose height is 120 cm, a 30 cm chair and a 52 cm high desk or table are suitable.
For a student whose height is 140 cm, a 37 cm chair and a 62 cm high desk or table are suitable.
For a student whose height is 160 cm, a 40 cm chair and a 67 cm high desk or table are suitable.
However, it is important to understand that these figures are generalized and conditional. For example, if the child has long legs, he may need a higher chair than indicated above. The student’s legs in a sitting position should reach the floor, stand on it evenly, do not rest their knees on the inner surface of the desk top, do not bend under the seat. Therefore, before buying it is desirable to “try on” the furniture.
What should be the seat, back and armrests of the product
Consider what the back, seat and armrests should be like for proper school furniture:
Doctors recommend buying furniture for schoolchildren with an orthopedic, slightly concave back. Especially if the child is still small, and his posture is just beginning to take shape. The back, which repeats the curve of the spine, supports the body, reduces the load, creates comfortable conditions for a long stay in a sitting position. It is also very desirable that the height and angle of inclination can be adjusted by fixing the back in the correct position – it should reach the student to the shoulder blades and keep the torso in a straight position (the line of the hips and the back should form an angle of 90 degrees).
The seat of the product should be slightly concave in the middle, moderately hard, a person should not drown in it. At the same time, a straight, level, firm seat can cause discomfort when sitting for a long time.
A chair that is bought for a student of primary and secondary school age should ideally not have armrests. If the furniture is correctly selected in height, armrests simply will not be needed, since the student’s hands will lie on the tabletop, the humerus and radius bones will form a right angle, and the elbows will not hang down. If there are armrests, the baby will get used to leaning on them, twisting the torso in one direction or the other, which can cause scoliosis. Please note that on sale you can often find models of school furniture, the armrests of which can be removed and installed back.
Common models of furniture for students
There are many models of school furniture on sale, consider the features of the main options:
A classic product with the usual flat seat, flat back, four legs. This option is not very good in terms of comfort and ergonomics, but there is support for the back, stability and strength are in line with the norm. This model is more suitable for children of primary school age, it is not adjustable in height or other parameters, so it does not “grow” with the child. But such a model is relatively inexpensive.
Office chair or computer chair with adjustable backrest and seat height, suitable for high school students. But his back, as a rule, is not arched enough, it cannot be called orthopedic. Such a product can be additionally equipped with a special pillow under the back, which allows you to unload the lumbar spine.
School chair without a back – such a product is suitable for high school students. It has one point of support for the body, creates a load on the muscles of the back and on the spine, but is characterized by increased mobility and ease of movement of a person around the room.
Orthopedic model, in which both the back, and the seat, and the height of the product are adjustable. This is the best option for a student at any age, but such a product is usually expensive.
exotic options. For example, a saddle chair, on which the student is in a sitting / standing position – this model is suitable for children over 10-12 years old.
Also, relatively recently, the so-called knee models, which are very popular in Europe, appeared in the assortment of domestic stores. The design of such a product assumes the presence of a stand under the knees, which allows the student to lean forward, keep his back straight, remove most of the load from it. Ergonomic knee chair with an emphasis on the lower body and a comfortable backrest, has height adjustments for different heights, so it is suitable for both first-graders and adult students. On sale there are even school chairs of the knee model with a movable base, which allows a person to swing, as in a rocking chair, move the center of gravity, sit in several positions alternately.
