When to choose a childminder?
To find a childminder in a serene way, do not hesitate to do it early! Don’t feel like you have to wait until your baby is born to start searching. You can start your research from the sixth month of pregnancy, which will give you time to choose!
Nursery assistant: be well informed before recruiting her
Before recruiting our childminder, it is important to know all the necessary elements. How much will it cost? Is it compulsory to to announce ? Should we establish a contract ? And if the baby is sick, do we have to pay for it anyway? All the answers to these questions can be found on the FEPEM website. Information also from the CAF, the town hall, the PMI, the National Federation of individual employers (18, rue Saint-Marc, 75002 Paris. Tel: 08 25 07 64 64.
Professional qualities, and a good feeling!
Finding THE right nanny takes time. We start by asking our neighborhood: maybe parents we know have their baby looked after by a childminder. they recommend strongly? In the square, have we ever seen a childminder who we particularly appreciated? attitude with toddlers? We also think of “practical”: there is no need to move too far from our home or our place of work, under penalty of forcing the baby to long journeys in the morning and in the evening.
On the “feeling” side, we list professional and human qualities which are essential to us. And before deciding, we see several candidates, a first time alone, and a second time with the dad. Their skills are difficult to assess, in addition to the references they can provide us, we also rely on our feeling and word of mouth. And we tell ourselves that our choice is not final: if it does not suit, we will change!
We meet the nursery assistant at her home
To exercise, the childminder must have a license, compulsory, issued by the Departmental Service of Maternal and Child Protection (PMI). She is an early childhood professional, who has rights and obligations. On our side, we have to sign an employment contract.
It’s important to see the place where our child will be kept. We visit his apartment, we make sure of the cleanliness, the quality of the equipment, the toys available to the children. Does she also have children? Will they be present at the same time as ours? A point to be clarified in all honesty. Know that when they are under 3 years old, the number is limited to 3 children, those of the maternal assistant included. This presence can also be an asset, by promoting the socialization of your child. We do not hesitate to discuss with the parents who entrust their baby to him, we ask him for their contacts in order to be able to hear their experience.
Paid leave, remuneration, absence for training… The rights and obligations of the person who will welcome our baby are governed by the National collective agreement for childminders of private employers. We approach immediately the question of schedules : if we have long days, journeys that are likely to vary (traffic jams, public transport problems, etc.), we say so frankly. Conversely, if we do not work one day a week, and the baby will not be looked after that day, we say so too. We also talk to him about vacations, at least in general terms: our employer is forcing us to take the month of July? Or during the short holidays, baby will be looked after by his grandparents? We play our cards on the table, it’s better for everyone! It is better to anticipate the better to organize yourself later, or if this is not possible, look for another person, more compatible.
Xavier’s testimony: “We found the rare pearl ! »
“The good casting took a long time, but we did well to persevere. From the first meeting with Belinda, we found her friendly, warm and we found a lot of common points on how to educate a child. Belinda asked us lots of questions about the tastes and little rituals of our daughters. She asked us about our requirements regarding toilet training, the pacifier, meal times, naps… She was very clear about the schedules and we appreciated her frankness. She was coming out of a complicated experience with parents who always arrived late to pick up their child in the evening! She suggested that we set up a notebook to write down the key events of Girls’ Week. What has finally convinced us are the reactions of Pauline and Rose. Belinda offered to read them a book after she finished chatting with us. From the start, it matched them! “
Xavier, father of Rose, 1 year old, and Pauline, 3 years old.
We declare our maternal assistant at Urssaf (PAJEMPLOI)
The idea of moonlighting can seduce, to avoid paying social charges, or seduce the nanny – but the risks are too great. If our nanny does not contribute, she will have no social security coverage: no daily sickness benefit, no retirement, no unemployment benefit. For us, the employer, criminal and financial risk is heavy in the event of denunciation to the administration. In addition, we are not insured … in the event of a problem.
For information, consult the URSSAF site dedicated to hiring childminders. There are models of employment contracts, simulators of the cost of childcare, the amount of CAF aid to which one is entitled, legal information …
