How to check the quality of wine from a supermarket at home: I share 3 ways

I don’t know about you, but lately, before drinking a glass of new, not yet tasted wine, I always conduct a test for its naturalness.

Even if the bottle was bought from a supermarket, there is no guarantee that it is actually made from grapes. And the taste of the drink from the powder is not the most pleasant.

The story was shared by the subscriber Ruslan.

Eye check

I never skip this stage, I spend it in the store itself. I take the bottle, abruptly turn it upside down, then return it to its original position. I look at the bottom, if there is sediment, then the wine is definitely unnatural. A small amount of so-called cream of tartar is acceptable, but this is not common.

It looks like “tartar stone” in wine

Attention! Natural wine should not have sediment.

But this method is only suitable for white wines, since red ones are sold in dark glass containers, so it is problematic to see the presence of sediment. If the wine passes this test, then I usually buy a bottle, however, I definitely do more tests at home.

I pay attention to the traffic jam. It should be hard to open. The inside of the cork should not have a musty smell. At the same time, the cork should not be dry, but must have a light wine aroma.

Test in a glass

While I fill the glass, I look to see if the foam has appeared. Its presence is a signal that the drink is unnatural. If a good wine has a little foam, then it should disappear almost instantly after it is poured into a glass.

The presence of a small number of bubbles confirms the young age, that is, the remains of carbon dioxide are still preserved in the bottle.

First, I pour quite a bit of wine into a glass. I spied on this method of verification at the tasting. I begin to twist the glass in my hands, tilt it a little. The wine begins to flow down the sides of the glass. As soon as everything drains down, there should be no colored streaks on the glass, only transparent “ladies’ legs”.

Important! The thickness of the so-called lady’s legs judge the age of the drink. The older the wine, the thicker the film.

A fake, unnatural drink never leaves marks on the glass.

Glycerin test

This liquid is usually in any home first aid kit, even if not, it is inexpensive and is sold in every pharmacy. To check, it is necessary to combine glycerin with wine, observing a ratio of 1: 5.

It remains to wait a bit until the glycerin settles. Now let’s check what has changed.

To check the naturalness of wine, the use of glycerin is allowed.

Important! If glycerin in a glass of wine has acquired a color: purple, yellow, another shade, then the wine is not natural.

The shade of a good wine will remain the same in color and texture. The glycerin must also remain in its original, viscous state.

Baking soda test

Every housewife in the house has baking soda. To test, you need a container with a wide neck.

I put a small amount of soda in the container. I pour some wine, literally one tablespoon.

Baking soda will help determine the naturalness of the wine.

Natural wine will color soda blue, gray, it must darken. If nothing happened, then you have purchased counterfeit or powdered wine.

Water test

The method of checking the naturalness of wine with water, which I found on the Internet, confused me a lot. It allegedly should not dissolve in water, as it has a high density.

It looks like no one went to school. I’m even curious, have you tried this test?

Sooner or later, the wine will dissolve in water, since nothing happens in it only with oil, in other cases mixing will inevitably occur. Only different types of liquids will require different times.

Important! If you leave wine in water for a day, then both liquids will mix.

Good wine will keep the interface for some time, but the results of this “trick” are highly dependent on the strength of the wine, the amount of sugar and other nuances.

Noticed another interesting feature. Non-natural wines, even after they stand in the glass, retain a slight alcohol flavor. But, the most important thing that I managed to understand is that in no case should you chase cheapness.

You should always look at the bottle itself, it should not have chips around the edges or be dirty. The information on the label must be legible, and the label itself must be glued evenly. Do you check the wine from the supermarket for naturalness?
