How to check the quality of honey? Video
Honey is a popular medicinal product widely used in traditional medicine. But only natural honey contains over 60 trace elements useful for the body. A low quality surrogate can cause serious health damage. That is why it is so important to know how to properly check the quality of honey at home.
Put a couple of drops of honey in the palm of your hand and rub lightly, and then run over it with a chemical pencil. If a blue blurry line remains on your hand, then there is a lot of water in the product.
In addition, this test can be carried out in another way: stick a sharpened chemical pencil into honey and twirl for a couple of seconds. In a natural product, the moisture index in which is within the normal range, there will be a barely noticeable grayish trace or it may not be at all.
But this method does not allow for an objective assessment of the quality of the product, it only shows the level of moisture. The fact is that the moisture content in this delicacy can vary depending on the type of honey, the conditions and timing of its collection. Also, this indicator can be higher in freshly pumped and unripe product.
Checking the consistency of honey at home
Spoon the honey with a spoon, roll it over and watch it drain. High-quality honey is viscous and thick: it will wrap around a spoon like a viscous ribbon. Also, when pouring natural honey from one container to another, you will notice that its stream is continuous and lies in folds, similar to accordion furs. Thus, a quality treat is neither too liquid nor too thick. Also, natural honey is uniform in consistency.
A quality product, unlike a fake, is easily rubbed between the fingers and is well absorbed by the skin
The color of honey can tell a lot about a product. So, floral is characterized by a light yellow color, and buckwheat can vary from lime-amber to brown. Please note that high quality liquid honey (whatever its color) must be clear.
Conduct an experiment: bring a tablespoon of honey to the fire and observe. The real product will slowly char and the fake one will light up with a blue flame.
In addition, the following test will help to distinguish a low-quality surrogate from natural honey: dilute a few drops of honey with water and drop a drop of iodine. If the solution has acquired a bluish tint, it means that the manufacturer of “honey” skillfully used starch instead of pollen. And if you add a few more drops of vinegar essence to the resulting solution, after which it sizzles, there is chalk or flour in the fake product.
High-quality honey is fragrant and does not have a pungent odor. If the aroma is dull and you smell a caramel, then you have melted honey in front of you. Note that frothy fermentation and sour aroma are all signs of poor quality honey.
