How to check a drain pump in a washing machine with your own hands

Checking the washing machine pump does not require much effort and skill. But nevertheless, not every home craftsman manages to do everything right, and most importantly – without consequences.

It also happens: if the check is incorrect, a pump breakdown is diagnosed, and the cause of the failure is a completely different detail – and all the efforts are wasted. If you check the pump pump correctly, then you can easily bypass possible problems and effectively troubleshoot your washing machine.

What you need to check

Usually people think about how to check the pump on a washing machine when such problems arise:

• Fault code. Appears on the electronic scoreboard thanks to the self-diagnosis system of your SMA. In machines without a display, you can diagnose a pump breakdown by decoding a combination of flashing lights on the control panel. If a combination of LEDs or an error code indicates a pump failure, then its check is mandatory.
• Before draining the waste water, the CM stops washing and “freezes” without draining the contents of the tank.
• The water drain pump does not make itself felt – there are no sounds or other signs of its activity.

If you are sure that it is worth checking the pump, do not postpone your decision, but start preparing the necessary tool:

• Multimeter (tester).
• Two screwdrivers: slotted and positive.
• Passatizhi.
• Awl.

Important! The tester must be serviceable. If it is not there (and you need it anyway), buy it yourself – it is inexpensive, but it will come in handy on the farm.

How to find a pump

Before checking if the pump is working or not, you need to find its location. Often, the design of the machine allows you to see the detail without even opening the case. Proceed as follows:

• Disconnect the machine from the water supply, sewer pipe and unplug the power cord.
• Remove the powder dispenser.
• Cover the floor with a rag.
• Lay the clipper on its side.
• If your model does not have a bottom, then everything is simple – the pump will be in the public domain right in front of you. It is located opposite the drain filter (you check it and clean it every 3 months). In general, this detail is difficult not to see or to confuse.

• If there is a bottom, then it must be removed by unscrewing the fasteners with a Phillips screwdriver. Pry the bottom with the second screwdriver.

If your washing machine is 100% protected from leaks by the manufacturer, then before checking the pump in the washing machine, you need to remove a special tray and sensor. To get close to the pump in this case, you need to proceed as follows:

1. Disconnect the AGR from the outlet, from pipes – sewer and water supply.
2. Drain the water using the emergency drain tube (located near the filter) or the drain filter.
3. Move the equipment to the center of the room, lay a rag.
4. Remove the detergent dispenser.
5. Drain the water through the hose or filter at the bottom of the housing.
6. Lay the machine on its side.
7. Pry and pull off all latches on the pallet (usually there are four of them).
8. Move aside the pallet to remove the wiring suitable for the sensor. The sensor itself is attached to the pallet.

Important! The sensor that you see on the pallet is a leak sensor. It is triggered when water gets into the sump. It is he who, having detected a leak, blocks the operation of the machine, stops the flow of water, and prevents the “universal flood” in the apartment.

Removing the pallet, you will see what you were looking for – a drain pump.

Verification process

Both the electrical and mechanical parts of the pump can be damaged. Many home craftsmen, forgetting about the mechanics, rush to check the electrics, armed with a tester. But often the pump stops working due to trapped debris.

Unfortunately, not all debris goes into the drain filter – some of it can collect in the area of ​​the impeller. Most often, hair and threads are wound around it, blocking work over time. If you are thinking how to check the pump without removing it from the engine, then we advise you to remove it, all the more so it is very easy to do this:

• Take a photo or video the location of the wiring. This will help you then reconnect everything correctly.
• Remove the wiring.
• Use a pair of pliers to release the hose and nipple clamps. Don’t break them – they will come in handy again.
• Turn the pump half a turn to the left and remove the part effortlessly.

Inspect the impeller carefully before disassembling the pump. If you notice debris blocking its operation, then go clean. Do not forget to thoroughly clean the entire pump of any dirt accumulated in it. Also, gaskets can be attributed to mechanics – they can wear out.

Important! Service centers do not recommend repairing the pump, offering to change it immediately. But the “craftsmen” came up with a more economical way. They know how to lubricate the washing machine pump and use lithol or graphite grease.

If the mechanics are in perfect order, you can check the electrics. Proceed in this way:

• Turn on the tester by selecting voltage test mode.
• Attach the test leads to the contacts.
• Does the display show “0” or “1”? Perhaps the pump motor has burned out – replace it.
• If a three-digit number glows on the screen, then the problem may not be in the motor itself, but in the electronic control unit. More accurate diagnostics are required.
