How to change eating behavior

Many of us at least once in our lives were on a diet, tried separate or fractional meals, limited ourselves to sweet and fatty foods. But more often than not, we have enough for a short time, and the weight returns to its previous indicators. Eating behavior specialist Anastasia Tomilova talks about the basic principles that will help you not only change your attitude to food, but also stick to new eating habits.

We often hear that the proverbial “getting out of your comfort zone” is necessary to really make a difference in your life. Sometimes this is true, but this principle does not work with eating behavior. Our body perceives a severe restriction in nutrition as a threat to life and begins to resist with all its might. You can be sure: the desire to live (in other words, to eat) will win.

You need to approach the change in eating behavior consciously, be ready to really change, study yourself and move towards the intended goal in stages and at your own pace. So what do you need to do to change your relationship with food?

1. Study the features of your eating behavior. Those who want to lose weight have a lot in common, but the reasons and features that led to overeating and weight gain are different. It is important to understand what you need to pay attention to.

2. Find an additional resource. Food is one of the most powerful emotional resources. But you can enjoy and “fill up” in other ways. To consolidate changes in nutrition, you need to find the sources of these pleasures. And mentally prepare for the fact that these “substitutes” will not immediately become for you as simple, trouble-free and psychologically effective as food.

3. Pick the right technology. Strict diets are not suitable for anyone. Correct technology takes into account your individual characteristics. Its essence is in the balance of small restrictions and freedom of choice.

4. Develop food awareness. This does not mean that you gather your will into a fist and refuse the cake on your own birthday. Mindfulness implies inclusion, enjoyment of food. You need to learn to listen to your body and understand what and when you really want to eat.
