How to care for a fig tree
Until recently, it was believed that the exotic fig tree, which gives tasty and healthy fruits, can only grow in hot climates. It turned out that this is not the case. With the right farming techniques, you can plant a fig tree, or fig tree, as it is also called, in your garden. It will feel good in indoor conditions.
How to care for a fig tree
In the subtropics, in the homeland of the fig tree, the tree gives up to 3 harvests per year. In our latitudes, you can count on 1-2 crops. And even this can be considered a miracle. Figs, when properly cared for, can withstand freezing winters down to –20 ° C.
In a familiar climate, the tree needs almost no maintenance. The main thing is to harvest on time and make sure that the roots of the plant do not dry out during especially dry seasons. In our climate, in contrast to the subtropics, more careful care of the fig tree should be provided. To keep your plant doing well, take care of it like this:
- Water the fig tree abundantly. With a lack of moisture, the root system can dry out. Curling leaves are a sign of a lack of fluid.
- Form the crown by regularly pruning young shoots. So the tree will not focus on growing up and in breadth, but on the development of fruits.
- Keep the peri-stem circle in good condition. To do this, you can either mow and not remove the grass under the tree, or loosen the soil from time to time.
- Cover the plant for the winter by pretreating it from rodents. Carefully bend the tree to the ground and cover with a material that allows air to pass through. Then sprinkle the resulting structure with earth.
The most difficult figs to adapt will be the first 3 years of life. Then the tree will get stronger and will not require much attention. If you have planted a plant in a room, be prepared to replant it in larger pots every year.
The fig tree will give fruit in the 2nd year after planting. Their taste depends on the intensity of watering. To make it richer and more pleasant, reduce the amount of watering during the fruiting period. With a little effort, you can enjoy delicious fruits every year.
The reference to the unpretentious southern tree is often found in the Bible. For its delicate taste, fig berries are called paradise
Even a non-fruiting exotic tree, gardeners who managed to grow it, do not remove it from the site. Its beauty is difficult to describe. This is a must see.
