In our family, no holiday is complete without champagne. And since the new year is approaching, my wife and I have already bought a few bottles.
But it’s not enough to stock up on champagne, it’s important to open it correctly: so that you don’t break through the stretch ceiling and surprise guests.
Why does champagne shoot when opened
All 10 years of our life together I open bottles. And here’s what I noticed: most often champagne shoots if it was stored incorrectly.
How to properly store champagne:
- storage temperature should be from +5 to +18 degrees: a refrigerator is suitable, and from autumn to spring – a balcony;
- it is impossible for the bottle to stand, it must lie, otherwise the cork will be damaged;
- Champagne should not be exposed to sunlight.
Important: I always pay attention to the cork: if the cork is wooden, champagne is stored for two years, if plastic – only a year.
The best temperature for serving champagne
When serving, sparkling wine should be at a temperature of 8 degrees, champagne – no higher than 6 degrees.
Previously, champagne was served almost frozen, so that the yeast that settled from the drink did not get into the glass.
Of course, my stomach would not be happy with frozen champagne, and yours, I think, too. But those were the rules.
Later, a method was devised to get rid of the sediment. The bottle was turned over and waited (several months) until all the sediment was in the neck of the bottle. Then the drink was frozen, opened and the “yeast” ice cork was taken out.
Later, winemakers learned how to filter champagne with high quality and the need to freeze the drink disappeared. And the ideal temperature was 8 degrees, at which the taste and aroma of champagne is revealed to the maximum.
Have you noticed how champagne is served in restaurants? I have often seen them brought in buckets filled with ice.
However, this will not cool the drink. To maintain a temperature of 6-8 degrees in the bucket, there should be exactly a mixture of water and ice.
What you need to open champagne beautifully
Opening a bottle is not so difficult – gas bubbles strive to push out the cork anyway. Our task is to prevent the crystal service from breaking through or getting hit in the forehead by one of the guests. For this we need:
- towel;
- and actually hands.
5 ways to open champagne beautifully
For myself, I use 5 ways to open champagne easily and beautifully (without hussar sabers, beating the neck and other delights).
Method 1: open champagne without cotton
What are we doing:
- Remove the foil from the neck.
- We unwind the wire that holds the cork.
- Using a towel, wipe the “sweat” from the bottle and hold the cork.
- We tilt the bottle at an angle of about 45 degrees and slowly pull out the cork, scrolling it a little.
Important: do not forget to hold the cork with a towel.
Method 2: for girls
I call it that because even a girl can open a bottle in this way if there are no men nearby.
- We put the bottle on the table and wrap it in a towel.
- We form a small pocket above the neck.
- Remove foil and wire.
- Carefully unscrew the cork, holding it with your hand.
Helpful Hint: I always wait a little bit after opening a bottle to allow excess gases to come out of the drink. So champagne does not foam and is easily poured into a glass.
Method 3: soft cotton
To open soft cotton champagne, proceed as follows:
- Tilt the bottle at a 45 degree angle.
- Remove foil and wire.
- We clamp the cork and begin to rotate the bottle (not the cork).
- When the gases begin to push out the cork, tilt the bottle a little more and pull out the cork.
Important: This method is only suitable for champagne with a wooden cork.
Method 4: remove the plastic cork
I’ll clarify right away: in champagne sealed with a plastic cork, there are more gases, so the previous methods will not work.
How to open such a bottle:
- Remove foil and wire.
- Hold the cork with your thumb.
- When the gases begin to move the plug along the neck, hold it with your hand so that it does not fly out.
- After the cork has come out, we slightly tilt the bottle and wait for the release of excess gases.
Important: be sure to hold the cork with your hands, otherwise it will fly out of the bottle.
Method 5: loud bang
Sometimes, to create a fun atmosphere, I use this method. How to make a spectacle out of opening a bottle:
- Shake the bottle a little.
- Remove foil and wire.
- We remove our fingers from the cork and let it come out of the bottle on its own.
Important: do not direct the bottle towards guests or breakable objects, no matter how much they bother you.
