Pregnancy: when to tell your employer?
The law does not provide for a legal deadline. Clear, nothing obliges us to warn our employer. But in practice, it is strongly recommended to reveal your pregnancy sufficiently early, if only to benefit from possible legal and contractual advantages (job adaptation for example), as well as protection against dismissal provided for by law. If we have the possibility, we announce our pregnancy verbally during a meeting with our employer. We present him with a medical certificate attesting to our pregnancy and we specify the expected date of our delivery as well as the dates of our maternity leave. We can also make our announcement by mail, and preferably by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt.
The art and manner of announcing your pregnancy: we choose the right moment
We avoid trapping our boss between two meetings, before or after lunch (beware of nausea!). If bad news has just fallen, we do not hesitate to postpone the meeting either.
We prepare our speech the day before
If our boss does not expect it, this pregnancy will immediately trigger a host of questions for him: “And when do you stop?” How long… And maternity leave? So we review our little files the day before to be clear on all these administrative points.
We stay neat
It is not because you are pregnant that flip flops should replace sandals, shapeless t-shirts, light blouses. Appearance matters, and if we show up sloppy, when we are usually dressed to the nines, our boss may take a dim view of this physical mutation. And imagine the worst for the months to come…
We free ourselves from the guilt
Apologizing for being pregnant is the last thing to do! If we don’t take responsibility for pregnancy, who will do it for us? Every year 530 babies are born to working mothers, so we are no exception. There is a good chance that our interlocutor is also a parent. So we don’t apologize! We approach our pregnancy as a beautiful event that is part of life. Especially since we are only going to leave for four months, not enough to destabilize the life of a company …
We don’t talk about our various pregnancy ailments
Let’s agree: even if he seems very accommodating, our boss does not care about our nausea, abdominal pain and other pregnancy ailments. The miscalculation: presenting her maternity as a disabling condition. So we keep our little miseries (and our great joys) to ourselves, or our favorite colleague.
We remain reassuring
We are reassuring, we show that we have planned everything and that we really want to continue our career, even more with this baby to come. We reassure his boss by explaining to him that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will carry out his mission until we go on maternity leave. And that for the future, we will immediately do everything to ensure that our replacement goes as smoothly as possible.
Testimonial: announce your pregnancy to your employer
“It was pretty bad… My boss was also pregnant. I really felt like my pregnancy was not coming at the right time, I who had fought so hard to get pregnant. In addition, according to my calculations, I was going to leave a week before his return. After being anxious for several days, I made up my mind. I went up to see my boss. Barely returned to his office, with that confused look that I hate myself, I announce: “I must tell you something”. “You are pregnant,” she replied tit for tat. “Uh yeah, how do you know that?” “” You don’t come to see me often, so there, either you wanted a raise, or it was to tell me your pregnancy, and saw your smile … “. She suddenly hugged me warmly. I was relieved. I regret, on the other hand, not to have been clearer on the date of my maternity leave. Because suddenly, every time she came into the office, she would tell me “When are you leaving?” “. Not very nice… ”
