Microsoft Excel is often used to perform operations with percentages. They are especially important in sales calculations. For example, you need to know what changes in sales volume are planned. Excel tools allow you to add numbers with percentages and create formulas to quickly calculate the rise and fall in sales. Let’s figure out how to add a percentage of the value to the value itself.
How to add percentage and number manually
Imagine that there is a numerical value of some indicator, which increases over time by several percent, or by several tens of percent. This increase can be calculated using a simple mathematical operation. It is necessary to take a number and add to it the product of the same number by a certain percentage. The formula looks like this: Sum of a number and a percentage=number+(number*percent%). To check the action on an example, we will compose a condition of the problem. The initial production volume is 500 units, growing by 13% every month.
- You need to select a cell in the created table or any other free cell. We write in it an expression with data from the condition. Don’t forget to put an equal sign at the beginning, otherwise the action will not be performed.
- Press the “Enter” key – the desired value will appear in the cell.
This method of calculation involves further filling in the cells of the table manually. Copying will not help, because the expression contains specific numbers, it does not refer to the cell.
Definition of percentage of numbers
Sometimes it is necessary that the report displays how much the value of some indicator grows not in percentage, but in the usual numerical format. In this case, the percentage of the initial value is calculated. Use the following formula to calculate the percentage of a number: Percentage=(Number*Number of percentages in numeric format)/100. Let’s take the same numbers again – 500 and 13%.
- You need to write the value in a separate cell, so select it. We write the formula with the indicated numbers, in front of it is an equal sign.
- Press “Enter” on the keyboard and get the result.
It happens that the indicator regularly grows by several units, but it is not known how much it is as a percentage. For such a calculation, there is also a formula: Percent difference=(Difference/Number)*100.
Earlier it was found out that the volume of sales is growing by 65 units per month. Let’s calculate how much it is as a percentage.
- You need to insert known numbers into the formula and write it in a cell with an equal sign at the beginning.
- After pressing the “Enter” key, the result will be in the cell.
It is not necessary to multiply by 100 if the cell is converted to the appropriate format – “Percentage”. Consider changing the cell format step by step:
- You need to click on the selected cell with RMB – a context menu will open. Select the “Format Cells” option.
- A window will open where you can select the appropriate format. We find the entry “Percentage” in the list on the left. If you need an integer, you should put a zero value in the column “Number of decimal places” using the arrow buttons or manually. Next, click “OK”.
- Now the expression can be reduced to a single action.
- The result will appear in percentage format.
Adding a number and a percentage using a formula
To add a percentage of a number to the number itself, you can use the formula. This method is useful in cases where the results of calculations need to quickly fill the table.
- Select a free cell and fill it with the formula. The data should be taken from the table. The formula is: Number+Number*Percentage.
- First, we write the equal sign, then select the cell with the number, put a plus, and again click on the cell with the initial value. We enter an asterisk as a multiplication sign, after it – a percentage value.
- Press the “Enter” key to get the result of the calculation.
- Fill in the remaining cells of the column. To do this, you need to copy the formula with an offset – this means that the cell designation in the formula will change when you move to the cell below.
There is a square marker in the corner of the selected cell. It is necessary to hold it down and stretch the selection to the entire column of the table.
- Release the mouse button – all selected cells will be filled.
- If integers are needed, the format must be changed. Select the cells with the formula, right-click on them and open the format menu. You need to select a number format and reset the number of decimal places.
- The values in all cells will become integers.
How to add a percentage to a column
There are reports in this format, when one of the columns indicates the percentage growth of the indicator over a period of time. The percentage is not always the same, but it is possible to calculate the change in indicators using the calculation.
- We compose a formula according to the same principle, but without writing numbers manually – only table data is required. We add to the volume of sales its product with the percentage of growth and press “Enter”.
- Fill all the cells with a copy selection. When selected with a square marker, the formula will be copied to other cells with an offset.
Forming a chart with percentage values
According to the results of calculations, it is possible to draw up a visual equivalent of a table – a diagram. On it you can see which product is most popular when it comes to sales.
- Select the cells with percentage values and copy them – to do this, right-click and find the “Copy” item in the menu or use the key combination “Ctrl + C”.
- Go to the “Insert” tab and select the type of chart, for example, a pie chart.
