Panties are clothes that take up little space in the wardrobe, just like in our head, and yet their cut and material is really important for health. Improperly selected can cause irritation of intimate areas or infections. Dr. Anna Horbaczewska, obstetrician-gynecologist, even claims that, for health reasons, sometimes they can not be worn, while strings should be selected only for special occasions.
- Intimate infections are one of the most common diseases of the genital tract in women. These are bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections. They lead to disturbances of the vaginal flora
- Several hundred different types of microorganisms live in the vagina, and only a small part of them can cause infections (including yeasts and E. coli)
- Female infections are accompanied by pain, discharge, burning, vaginal itching, vaginal swelling or dryness
- In men, the symptoms of infection are: pain when urinating, redness and burning of the penis, itching in the intimate areas, white coating on the penis or purulent discharge from the urethra

Is the material of the panties important for health?
Dr. Anna Horbaczewska, gynecologist-obstetrician at the Superior Medical Center in Krakow, suggests that breathable panties made of natural materials are the best for women’s health. Better to choose cotton ones, not synthetic ones.
– Synthetic materials or inserts under the plastic layer for sticking to underwear prevent air circulation in the perineum. Such a situation leads directly to the formation of intimate infections – warns the doctor.
He also adds that the panties should be at the same time adjusted to our shapes, but not too tight, because they can cause abrasions to the skin and mucosa in the area of the labia minora, and thus increase discomfort or lead to intimate infections.

Don’t wear a wet bathing suit
However, during the holidays, when we bathe in the pool or the sea, it is best to take off a wet suit and change into dry clothes. Wearing damp clothes and cold clothing can not only cause a vaginal infection, but also lead to a bladder infection.
Thongs – only for special occasions?
Thongs are not the best type of underwear when it comes to intimate areas. It’s also not that we can’t wear them at all. Dr. Horbaczewska advises you to remember about a good size first of all. Underwear should not be too tight.
– If the thongs have some decorative elements (e.g. lace) and are used for everyday wear, not only for special occasions, it is important not to irritate the skin – adds the doctor.
Is it healthy to walk without panties?
Some doctors talk about going without panties, especially in summer. Is it advisable for health reasons?
– If patients are prone to recurring infections, they should not wear underwear whenever possible. For example, when they wear a dress or skirt at home. Air access to the vulva and perineal area, especially in summer, is very important, advises the gynecologist.
Proper intimate hygiene is very important. You cannot overdo it, but it is worth using the appropriate preparations, eg. Intimate hygiene gel for women and girls Strong Protection DermoXEN PROTETTIVO available at a promotional price on Medonet Market.
How often to change panties?
Changing briefs once a day is perfectly fine, although sometimes, for health reasons, it is worth doing it more often. These are individual situations, i.e. recurring infections or increased amount of discharge (vaginal discharge).
– In such situations, it is better to change underwear more often. However, it is not that every woman has to carry spare panties in her purse and go to the toilet twice a day to change them – says the doctor.
