How often can a face peel be done?

The peeling procedure is carried out both in the salon at the cosmetologist, and independently with the help of products for home use. The only question is: how often should I do it so as not to harm the skin?

What is peeling

Peeling got its name from the English to peel, which in English means “peel”. Its task is to remove keratinized dead cells (keratinocytes) from the surface of the skin.

medical expert Vichy Elena Eliseeva explains: “The older we get, the slower the renewal of keratinocytes. At age 20, the renewal cycle is 28 days, and by age 50, this process can take twice as long. The face, covered with a two-month layer of dead cells, looks gray, rumpled, the skin seems rough and unpleasant to the touch, the makeup does not fit in the best way. Therefore, with age, regular peeling becomes a necessity for any skin type. Although the owners of oily problem skin get used to the procedure from youth.

Between the words “peeling” and “exfoliation” you can put an equal sign. Both of them mean the release of the epidermis from dead cells of the stratum corneum.

There are two types of peeling.

  1. Mechanical, from scrub to microdermabrasion, involves the action of an abrasive.

  2. Chemical works with drugs based on acids in various concentrations.

The choice of method depends on the tasks. In general, peeling is capable of a lot.

  • Minimize acne and post-acne.

  • Correct scars and wrinkles.

  • Lighten age spots.

  • Rejuvenate the skin.

  • Fight dull complexion.

How often can mechanical peeling be done?

Home

Modern scrubs often combine abrasive particles with caring, moisturizing ingredients for maximum comfort and effect.

Scrubs are the main tool for mechanical peeling at home. They work with abrasive particles of both natural (ground fruit pits, shells, diatoms, etc.) and synthetic origin. Such home peeling is performed using three formats.

  1. Scrub in its pure form, it is recommended to apply 2 times a week for oily, dense skin; 1 time per week – with normal skin; 1 time in 2 weeks – with dry.

  2. Gommage includes soft polymer granules as an abrasive. It is not very effective for oily skin, but is great for dry skin. Gommage can be used weekly.

  3. Scrubbing cleansers mainly intended for oily and problematic skin. They are usually multifunctional, contain abrasive particles, as well as, for example, clay and can be used as a wash gel, scrub and purifying mask. In products for daily use, scrubbing particles are smaller and more gentle, and their concentration is less than in classic scrubs. In the composition of cleansing cosmetics for other skin types, soft abrasives in the form of polymer granules are also often introduced.

Daily products with scrubbing particles have a wonderful tonic effect – they not only refresh and improve complexion, but also help you wake up.

Salon

Mechanical peeling is an excellent tonic.

Chemical peels in salons have seriously supplanted mechanical peels, but the latter are still popular.

  1. Brushing (brossage) dead cells are removed with a special brush. Recommended for oily skin. Since the procedure is superficial, it can be done once a week.

  2. Ultrasonic cleaning acts deeper, exfoliation occurs with the participation of mechanical ultrasonic waves. This procedure is suitable for all skin types and is considered quite gentle. Like any peeling course, ultrasonic cleaning is done 1-2 times a year. With oily skin – more often.

  3. Microdermabrasion has a profound effect. With the help of abrasives, the surface of the skin is polished and leveled. This stimulates its renewal and allows you to get rid of post-acne, small scars, wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for dry and sensitive skin, as it overly traumatizes it.

The beauty of mechanical peeling is that it is a facial massage that stimulates blood circulation and lymph flow, which leads to improved skin condition.

How often can a chemical peel be done?

Chemical peeling has been in the beauty industry for a long time and is considered the most effective exfoliation method, which is suitable even for sensitive skin.

Surface

To correct any defect, smooth and rejuvenate the skin, a course of superficial chemical peeling can be done once every six months in a beauty salon – as a supplement to weekly home procedures.

For surface chemical peeling, the following substances are used:
  • fruit, or alpha-hydroxy acids (ANA): tartaric, glycolic, citric, malic, mandelic;

  • beta hydroxy acids (BHA): salicylic acid;

  • lipohydroxy acid (LHA);

  • retinol derivatives;

  • kojic acid;

  • azelaic acid.

Median

This type of peeling involves the removal of several layers of the epidermis. It is based on the same ingredients as for surface peeling, but in a higher concentration. Median peeling is a professional procedure, targeted damage to the skin in order to activate its regenerative functions.

For medium peeling, some more aggressive acids can also be used.

The course is carried out 1-2 times a year, depending on the type of skin and the problem that needs to be solved. The drug and the frequency are chosen by the beautician based on the results of the examination.

Deep

This is a serious medical procedure, which is carried out strictly according to the doctor’s prescription with the participation of an anesthesiologist.

Superficial chemical peeling has become an annual beauty routine for many.

Tips and Precautions

For oily skin

  • The peeling procedure is important to carry out on thoroughly cleansed skin.

  • After peeling, moisturizing and protection from the sun is necessary.

  • Look for dual-action products that combine elements of mechanical and chemical peels for maximum effect.

Most cleansers designed for oily problem skin provide light peeling due to salicylic acid in the composition. But 1-3 times a week it is worth carrying out deep cleansing with the help of special exfoliating products and masks.

For dry skin

  • Do not be afraid of acid peeling. It is needed at least once a week to keep the skin radiant.

  • At home, use acid formulas only at night, and apply a cream with a maximum SPF factor the next day.

  • The ideal time for salon peeling courses is September-November and March-April, that is, during periods when there is no bright sun and severe frost.

  • Intensive moisturizing and nutrition of the skin after peeling is strictly required.
