Work at height – construction, home renovation, tree cutting

First of all, these tips are addressed to elderly people who are at risk due to age-related changes. Because those who are over 50 years old often already have osteochondrosis of the cervical spine, there are vascular changes. When working at height, a person often throws his head back, as a result of which the blood flow in both vertebral arteries is blocked, in combination with atherosclerosis of other vessels supplying the brain, this can lead to sudden loss of consciousness and orientation. A person can fall down stairs, get injured, in the worst case, it will end in ischemic stroke.

Safety precautions. Don’t throw your head back. Choose a ladder that is long enough to carry out work at eye level. The best option is a sliding ladder.

Working with a shovel and rake

In the elderly, the spine is no longer so young, there are changes in the intervertebral discs, ligaments, small joints are prone to arthrosis. With a prolonged stay in an unfavorable bent position, all the muscles of the back are strained, which can lead to their spasm and severe pain in the lower back. It is still possible to eliminate this by putting on heat or taking medicine. But in the country they do not just stand in the wrong position, but do something for a long time: they work with a shovel, rake, weed the beds, sitting on a bench. With prolonged stress, this can lead to the development of an intervertebral hernia. And this is already a serious problem – surgical intervention will be required.

Safety precautions. Work full-length garden beds with a straight back by purchasing long-handled tools. It is convenient if they are telescopic, that is, when they can be adjusted. Change the hand in which you hold the shovel or rake from time to time.

Don’t work on a small bench – it’s an illusion that it’s easier this way, you’ll get the same problems. When weeding the beds, it is better to get on all fours. But it is difficult to be in this position for a long time. In adults, the knees are already sick, many have arthrosis of the knee joints. This in itself is unpleasant. Therefore, such a situation must be prepared.

There are two ways. The cheapest and most affordable is to use construction knee pads, which will help protect the knee joints from the pressure of your own body. The second option is to make an injection of hyaluronic acid. Worry about it ahead of time if you know that you have arthrosis. Choose a quality drug, its molecular weight should be 6 million daltons, the required amount is 6 milliliters. The medicine works for a year. It will reduce pain, improve the sliding of bones in the joint.

Lifting and dragging weights

Don’t try to carry everything in one go, take a reasonable weight.

Safety precautions. Distribute the weight evenly, for example, on two buckets and, most importantly, lift correctly. Do not hold the load with outstretched hands. Sit down, grab the weight, press it to your chest and lift. Do not bend forward or to the side and stand with your back straight.

If you have to work on the lower back, it is good to use a bandage – a special belt that supports the back. It will allow you not to take unfavorable postures. Choose a bandage on strong Velcro and on a double wrap, medium fixation and a certain width – the upper edge is above the shoulder blades, the lower one goes over a third of the buttocks. In the lumbar region, the bandage should have 4-8 rigid metal or plastic inserts. Yes, in summer it can be hot, but your back will remain intact.
