Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant or antioxidant properties, and additionally protects the body in cardiovascular diseases and coronary artery disease. In addition, it reduces the level of lipid peroxidation markers, i.e. a phenomenon that promotes the development of atherosclerosis, and also reduces the risk of developing neoplastic diseases, especially those developing within the stomach or esophagus.
Its other functions are: an influence on immunity, increasing the absorption of calcium and iron, biosynthesis of carnitine, an auxiliary effect in glycemic control, synthesis of hormones, including norepinephrine, participation in the metabolism of fats, steroids and some drugs. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that destroys free radicals and supports the natural processes in the skin.
How much vitamin C should you take?
The optimal dose of vitamin C depends on the age and sex of a person, but also on other factors. For the Polish population, in the case of children between the ages of 1 and 3, it is 30 mg / day, and for children aged 4–12 — 40 mg / day. Between the ages of 13 and 18, the EAR for girls is 55 mg / day and for boys 65 mg / day.
The requirement for vitamin C in adult women is 60 mg / day, and in adult men 70 mg / day. People who may have a greater need for vitamin C include:
- smokers (the demand in this group of people is 40 mg higher than in people who do not smoke),
- elderly people,
- people with arterial hypertension,
- alcoholics,
- diabetes
- pregnant women,

The need for vitamin C – new research
There is no one specific dose for everyone, according to a new study by the University of Otago in New Zealand, reported by the journal Nutrients. It depends on body weight.
Studies have shown that for every 10 kg of excess weight, an additional 10 mg of vitamin C per day will be needed to optimize health. The researchers believe the findings have the potential to help overweight and obese people better protect themselves against viral diseases, including COVID-19.
