The number of words read is one of the indicators by which the level of development of a small child is determined. You can help your little one develop their reading speed.
How many words a minute must read a first grader
By the time the former kindergartener arrives at school, he must be able to count to 20, define geometric shapes and know the plants that grow in his area. But there are no requirements for reading for a future student.
Such requirements arise only during study. For the first time, the reading speed is checked six months after the start of training. In Soviet times, by the end of the first grade, a child had to read at least 47 words per minute to get “excellent”, now this figure has been reduced to 40 words.
What is the reading norm in elementary school
In Europe, reading speed is not assessed, but other indicators. Russian education is also gradually moving towards this. Now teachers take into account the following indicators:
- expressiveness of reading and the ability to place logical pauses;
- awareness of the essence of what has been read;
- the ability to connect the logical parts of the read;
- ability to analyze text;
- reproduction of complete words, not letters or syllables;
- clarity of pronunciation of sounds.
However, the reading speed is still measured and rated for it. By the second quarter, a first grader must read more than 20 words per minute for a grade of “5”, by the third – more than 36 words, by the fourth – more than 40 words. 4, 16 and 26 words are enough for the score “31”, respectively.
How to teach a child to read for grade 1
If you want your child to read quickly and well in elementary school, start teaching him in advance. Here are some exercises for preschoolers that will increase your reading speed:
- Competition. Invite your kid to compete who can read the text faster. Time yourself and take turns reading the text for speed. After that, together analyze which of you made what mistakes.
- Changing the pace of reading. Teach your toddler to read at a different pace. First, have him read the text very quickly, then slowly and expressively.
- Reading with interference. Construct a kind of pendulum out of paper and move it across the page in front of the reading child. This will help him perceive the entire text as a whole, and not its individual parts. Also, such an exercise trains imagination, because the child needs to think out those parts of the text that he does not see.
Most importantly, do not force the child to read through force. So you will only discourage him from studying.
Don’t worry if your toddler is reading slower than necessary. Instill in him a love of literature, and then he will definitely learn to read quickly, expressively and consciously.
Reading technique standards for grades 1-2
Grade 1: 25-30 words per minute – the norm after the first half of the year ; 30-40 words per minute – 2 semester . In the first grade, reading skills are tested once at the end of the school year. The reading speed of first grade students is not taken into account.
Grade 2: 40-50 words per minute – 1 semester ; 50-60 words per minute – 2 semester .
Reading technique standards for grades 3-4
Grade 3: 60-70 words per minute – 1 semester ; 70-80 words per minute – 2 semester . Silently, a third grader should read 20 or more words faster than aloud.
Grade 4: 80-90 words per minute – 1 semester ; 100-120 words per minute – 2 semester . Reading to yourself is 50 or more words faster than reading aloud.
The final assessment of knowledge is carried out at the end of the academic year of the third or fourth grade, either orally – the student performs practical tasks with a test, or in writing – in the form of a thematic test. It consists of five progressively more difficult tasks. To complete the task, the student must recognize the literary work and understand its main idea.
How to teach a child to read quickly?
Don’t force your child to read. Try to arouse his sincere interest in this activity. To do this, create a friendly, positive atmosphere and read with your child for about 20 minutes every day. Start reading columns of words in three or four letters. It can be a table on an A5 sheet, with 20-24 font.
Read passages of text that are 20 words longer than your child’s reading speed. Have the child read the passage three times in a row. Choose excerpts from the stories of Nosov, Dragunsky, Uspensky. They are written in a natural and lively language, so it will be easier to perceive the text.
As you move on to longer texts, have your child read the passage aloud and retell it. For children who read within 50 words per minute, one or two pages are sufficient. At higher reading speeds, gradually increase the amount of text.
