“If we want to achieve population resistance, we must also vaccinate our children”

In mid-May, registration for vaccinations against COVID-19 of young people aged 16-17 started (the parent will find the e-referral on the Internet Patient Account of their child). A week ago, the younger age group also joined this group. This is the result of the decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which on May 28 approved the application to extend the use of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 to children aged 12 to 15 (minors are vaccinated only with the Pfizer preparation). The Medical Council at the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland also unequivocally supported the vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 in children at this age.

In early June, the president of Warsaw Family Physicians, Dr. Michał Sutkowski, pointed to the main reasons why children should be vaccinated against COVID-19. First, children rarely get COVID-19, but they do. It can also end badly for the child, with complications, with problems – emphasized the expert, paying special attention to PIMS, a multi-system inflammatory syndrome that occurs in children as a result of coronavirus infection (also asymptomatic). It can lead to very serious complications (including circulatory disorders, drops in blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, edema, headache and dizziness, exacerbation of epileptic symptoms, convulsions and even micro-embolisms in the brain).

The second big reason that children should get vaccinated is that they transmit the virus to older people – their parents and grandparents, who are even more at risk of COVID-19 and complications.. In the opinion of Dr. Sutkowski, this transmissibility is high, because children are usually active. Lidia Stopyra, a specialist in infectious diseases and a pediatrician, speaks in a similar vein: – If we want to achieve population immunity, we must also vaccinate our children – she emphasized in an interview with Medonet.

Is Vaccinating Children Against COVID-19 Safe? The doctor calms down

Vaccinating children against COVID-19 has caused a lot of doubt among some parents. There were concerns about the side effects of vaccines, there were voices that the preparation may not have been well tested on children.

  1. Parents are afraid to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. What do the doctors say?

Dr. Stopyra reassures: “Once the vaccine has been tested and approved for use in a given age group, there is no need to fear the dangers. Prior to registration, Pfizer conducted a study on 2 children. Half of them received a placebo and the other half a vaccine. This alone is enough to say that the preparation has been tested and proven. If, however, this was not a sufficient confirmation for the parents, then we are lucky that we are not the first. In the US and Canada, 290-year-olds have been vaccinated for some time. This is already hundreds of thousands, if not millions of vaccinated children. If anything were to happen, we would already know it. Even if it were some very rare complications.

The pediatrician warns that without the COVID-19 vaccination, it cannot be assumed that children are protected against infection, “because in the fourth or subsequent wave, mutations that are particularly dangerous for young people may appear”. “We can’t risk something like that,” she emphasized.
