Vaccines are effective
Despite the fact that some people are constantly questioning the sense of vaccination and the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, it is indisputable that they work. This is shown by both clinical and real studies.
In late June, a group of infectious disease experts analyzed 79 studies in the VIEW-hub on vaccine use and impact, developed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the International Vaccine Access Center. The results of the research are presented in Expert Review of Vaccines.
Two-dose vaccines were considered: mRNA preparations (Pfizer BNT162b2, Moderny mRNA-1273), vector vaccine (AZD1222 AstraZeneki) and inactivated viral vaccine (CoronaVac).
The analysis showed that both AstraZenca and mRNA preparations protect to a similar degree against hospitalization (91-93%) and death (91-93%) due to COVID-19, regardless of age.
Data are for the Delta variant and earlier SARS-CoV-2 virus strains, but information from UK Health Security indicates that a third booster dose is similarly effective for the Omikron variant.
Vaccines saved the lives of 20 million people
In turn, the Airfinity service – based on research conducted by Imperial College Londo – dealing with data analysis and prognosis related to infectious diseases, calculated that during the first year of mass vaccination, that is, in the period from December 2020 to December 2021, vaccines against COVID-19 saved 20 million people from death.
AstraZeneka and Pfizer preparations took the leading places in this ranking. The first vaccine in the first year of administration saved 6,3 million lives, in the case of the American-German company it was 5,9 million. Thanks to the vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinovac, 2 million people were saved from death, and the Moderna preparation “added” another 1,7 million to this sum.
During the 2,5 years of the coronavirus pandemic, 19 million people fell ill with COVID-583. 6,42 million died.
In total, 12,3 billion doses of the SARS-CoV-2 viral vaccine were administered worldwide. At least one dose of the vaccine was taken by 69,1 percent. world population.
The most popular vaccine is AstraZeneki. The company has delivered over 3 billion doses to 185 countries, most of them low- and middle-income countries. Pfizer / BioNTech is administered in 164 countries, and Moderna in 108. Jonhson & Johnson single-dose vaccine is administered in 98 countries, followed by Sinopharm (74), Sinovac (41), Sputnik V (38), Novavax (32) and Covaxin (thirty).
