Third dose of COVID-19 vaccine. How many Poles have already been vaccinated?
The subject of the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine from the beginning caused controversy in Poland. When the first data on the fact that the “booster” increased immunity in vaccinated people appeared, the Ministry of Health did not decide to allow any group of patients to vaccinate. The Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, said directly that he was wondering how much it is about the patient’s good and how much about the interests of pharmaceutical companies.

Ultimately, however, a decision was made to extend the COVID-19 vaccination program. Initially, an additional dose could be given to people with impaired immunity, i.e. cancer patients as well as those who have undergone organ transplantation.
Later, the Ministry of Health decided that a supplemental dose would also be available to medics and people over 50 (provided that at least six months had elapsed since full vaccination). Registration was launched on September 23.
We asked the Ministry of Health for data on the number of vaccinated people, and to include this information in the daily vaccination report published on the gov.pl website. Thanks to this, we know that until yesterday in the group of medics and people 50+ the third dose was taken by 197. 442 applicants. An additional dose among immunocompromised patients was taken by 81 thousand. 683 people. On October 6, the data was already included in the MoH report. Currently, an additional dose has already taken 87 thousand. 171 immunocompromised patients and 217 thous. 579 medics and people 50+. This means an increase by (respectively) 5 thousand. 488 and 20 thousand 137 in one day.

Therefore, the list of people who can receive an additional dose of the vaccine includes:

- after stem cell transplants, if they have taken place within the last two years
- with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency syndromes
- with HIV infection (if it is untreated or advanced)
- chronically dialysed due to renal failure
- treated with high doses of corticosteroids or other medications that may suppress the immune response
