Prof. Parczewski: the amount of the virus in the population is very large
– It is currently very difficult to assess the situation related to COVID-19 cases. The testing system does not reflect the actual number of cases in any way. We detect them probably about 10 percent. However, when looking at how emergency rooms and hospitals work, you can see that the amount of the SARS-CoV-2 virus circulating in the population is very large, says Prof. Miłosz Parczewski, infectious diseases specialist and head physician for COVID-19 in the Szczecin provincial hospital.
He added that for many months the majority of those infected had mild symptoms – now the number of infections of moderate severity is starting again. As he explained, patients who are infected and have decompensation of other comorbidities dominate.
– Deaths have begun, and they have been gone for many months. The last two or three weeks were followed by several periocovid deaths in the hospital – these were the elderly, with many comorbidities, in whom covid caused decompensation of underlying diseases or other co-infections such as sepsis or clostridial infection – said an infectious disease specialist.
You are not sure if your ailments indicate COVID-19? Reach for a convenient antigen test that you can do yourself at home. You will find it in Medonet Market.
He indicated that most of them were vaccinated people. He also stressed that the majority of the population has either had COVID-19, is vaccinated, or has both had the disease and was vaccinated – the group remaining without immunization is therefore small.
– Two things are probably holding us now – previous immunization, which means that people get sick dynamically, but it does not turn into a cytokine storm and chronic, complicated covid. The second thing is the Omikron variant itself, which is more infectious but less associated with severe disease, said Prof. Parczewski.
