How many drugs with metformin are sold in Poland?

Millions of Poles buy drugs with metformin, which has come under the scrutiny of the Main Pharmaceutical Inspectorate, the National Medicines Institute and the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products. How many products containing metformin are sold every month in Polish pharmacies?

Drugs with metformin contaminated?

Yesterday, the Polish Ministry of Health received information from the European Medicines Agency that contamination of drugs with metformin was detected in foreign laboratories. They were found to contain N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), the same substance found in the previously withdrawn ranitidine and valsartan medicines. N-nitrosodimethylamine is a potentially carcinogenic substance. That is why the Ministry of Health has convened a crisis management team.

Metformin in Poland

According to the Ktomalek.pl portal, medicinal products containing metformin are used in Poland about 2 million patients – more or less this number of people in our country suffer from type 2 diabetes. 1,5–1,7 million packages of these drugs are sold each month. Definitely the most, because over 100 packaging, bought by residents of the poviat of the capital city of Warsaw. The poviats of Kraków, Wrocław and Łódź are located behind Warsaw.

So far, there has been no decision to suspend or withdraw any drugs with metformin in Poland.

Metformin – what is it?

Metformin is an anti-diabetic drug. It increases the sensitivity of tissues to insulin and inhibits the process of glucose absorption. It is also effective in regulating cholesterol and triglycerides, which influences the so-called lipid profile. Additionally, it supports weight reduction. Metformin is taken by people suffering from type 2 diabetes, especially those in whom diabetes coexists with obesity.
