How often are asymptomatic cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection? Estimates vary in frequency, but studies have finally emerged to establish a reliable percentage. Scientists analyzed over 100. COVID-19 cases on several continents.
- The coronavirus pandemic has been going on for 17 months. Almost 19 million people have already fallen ill with COVID-208 worldwide
- A large proportion of the infection cases were asymptomatic, but the scientists’ estimates have fluctuated

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, there have been reports of symptoms of COVID-19 infection. The symptoms change as the virus evolves and new variants appear. However, it is equally important to analyze asymptomatic cases of the disease. People who do not show any symptoms may unknowingly pass the SARS-CoV-2 virus to another. It was also difficult to distinguish between infected people who showed no symptoms at all from those who did not develop symptoms until some time after the examination.

COVID-19 worldwide: a third of cases are asymptomatic
A group of American and Canadian scientists have decided to analyze many studies to determine what the actual percentage of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases is. They took into account the results collected in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and World Health Organization Global Research Database from January 1, 2020 to April 2, 2021. Out of over a thousand studies, they considered 350, mainly from China, the United States, and Italy and South Korea.
They presented the results on the PNAS website of the American National Academy of Sciences, which publishes biomedical works.

These studies covered a total of over 104 thousand. laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases, of which 25 did not show any symptoms at the time of the study, and 7 220 remained asymptomatic also some time after the examination.
The team of researchers conducted two separate meta-analyzes. In the first one – with a much longer observation period – they took into account the cases in which symptoms did not appear also after the examination. In the second stage, the asymptomatic stage was distinguished from the presymptomatic stage, i.e. people who were asymptomatic at the time of the examination, and some time later showed signs of the disease.
