Thrombosis and deaths following COVID-19 vaccination

In April, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced that thrombosis is a very rare side effect of the AstraZeneki vaccine. Later, EMA also pointed to a possible link between thrombosis and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Thrombosis has also occurred after the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. It also turned out that thrombosis may occur with thrombocytopenia.

Our weekly analyzes of reports posted on the gov.pl website show that thrombosis has so far occurred in a total of 71 people vaccinated against COVID-19. In the past few weeks, nine more people became suspected of having thrombosis. As for gender, thrombosis (or suspected thrombosis) was more common in women – 45 cases. In men, this is a total of 31 cases. Six people died with thrombosis or other clotting problems.

Patient deaths have also been reported following COVID-19 vaccinations. However, not all of them showed a cause-and-effect relationship with the administration of the preparation. An NOP is by definition any event that occurs within four weeks of receiving the vaccine, and therefore, for example, reports of deaths resulting from a head injury are included in the table. By June 7, a total of 89 people had died after vaccination. It was 50 men and 38 women. There were six deaths following vaccination against COVID-31 between May 7 and June 19.

Which vaccines were followed by the most NOPs?

On the basis of the report available on the website pzh.gov.pl, it is possible to find out which vaccines against COVID-19 were more often followed by serious and severe adverse vaccine reactions. By analyzing the data, it is also possible to determine after which there have been more cases of thrombosis or deaths.

Data collected up to May 24 show that:

  1. after the vaccine Pfizer 2 thousand. 133 mild NOPs, 419 severe and 110 severe
  2. after the vaccine Modern there were 403 mild NOPs, 46 severe and 7 severe
  3. after the vaccine With AstraZeneca 2 thousand. 741 mild NOPs, 308 severe and 31 severe
  4. after the vaccine Johnson & Johnson 91 mild NOPs, 9 severe and 3 severe NOPs were reported

However, these data are not complete without information on how many doses of individual preparations have been administered. From the next table we find out what is the percentage of NOPs broken down by producers.

It looks like this (data until May 24):

  1. NOP-y po Pfizer concerned 0,024 of all vaccinations (both first and second dose)
  2. NOP-y po The modern ones concerned 0,032 of all vaccinations (first and second dose)
  3. NOP-y po AstraZenece concerned 0,113 of all vaccinations (first and second dose)
  4. NOP-y po Johnson & Johnson concerned 0,048 of all vaccinations (first and second dose)

From the analysis of the report available at pzh.gov.pl, we find out how many people died after administering a specific preparation against COVID-19 and what age they were.

After vaccination, the following died:

  1. 27 people vaccinated Pfizer. The youngest person was 48 years old, the rest are mostly people aged 70+. In the case of 15 consecutive deaths, there was no cause and effect relationship, but only a temporal relationship
  2. 3 people vaccinated AstraZeneca at the age of 48, 63 and 68. There was no causal relationship for two consecutive deaths
  3. 1 vaccinated person Moderne at the age of 57
  4. no deaths from the vaccine Johnson & Johnson

The table also provides information on various types of thrombosis following COVID-19 vaccination. As for the division into producers, it looks like this:

  1. 11 cases after Pfizer
  2. 15 cases after AstraZeneka
  3. 3 cases after Moderna
  4. 2 cases after Johnson & Johnson
