Adverse reactions after vaccination against COVID-19 in Poland. How many so far?

From December 27, 2020, the vaccination of society against COVID-19 is ongoing in Poland. From the second half of April, those interested will receive one of the four available preparations – Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneka or Johnson & Johnson. Until May 20, a total of 16 million 812 thousand were given. 136 million 4 thousand 995 are fully vaccinated.

On Wednesday, May 19, Minister Michał Dworczyk informed in an interview with RMF FM that so far approx. 48 percent. those who can be vaccinated received the first dose or were scheduled to be vaccinated. This is not enough to think about herd immunity to the coronavirus.

As Dworczyk admitted, responsible for this state of affairs is, inter alia, «Black PR» vaccines. Poles are concerned about undesirable reactions after administering the preparation. However, this is a small percentage – out of almost 17 million vaccines administered, side effects occurred in only 8. 662 cases, of which 7 thous. 313 was mild. This means that people who were vaccinated developed, for example, redness or soreness at the injection site or swelling of the arm. 1 thousand 349 adverse vaccinations were serious or severe.

Serious and severe vaccination reactions – how many thrombosis and clotting diseases?

In April, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed that there is a link between AstraZeneki and thrombosis. Later, she also pointed out that the condition could also be a very rare side effect after administering Johnson & Johnson. There have also been cases of thrombosis after the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. However, experts all the time emphasize that the risk is minimal – lower than, for example, when taking birth control pills.

In Poland, there have also been cases of thrombosis, thrombocytopenia and diseases related to blood clotting after vaccination for COVID-19. Last week we reported that the increase was greater than in recent months. The latest report (on May 18), however, shows that the trend has reversed. Last week, there were a total of 11 new cases of this type of disease, and one patient was suspected of having thrombosis. None of these adverse reactions have been fatal.

By May 18, thrombosis had occurred in a total of 55 people. In the past few weeks, seven more people have developed a risk of thrombosis. As for gender, thrombosis (or suspected thrombosis) was more common in women – 39 cases. In men, it is a total of 23 cases. Six people died with thrombosis or other clotting problems.

Among the post-vaccination reactions, there were also other diseases related to blood clotting. These are pulmonary embolism (4 men, one died and 10 women – including one suspicion), arterial embolism (1 man and 1 woman), systemic embolism (1 woman), phlebitis (3 women), thrombocytopenia (4 men, including one with thrombosis and 4 women), clotting problems (1 woman, fatal), blood clots (1 man, fatal), swelling of blood vessels (1 woman), embolism ( in 1 woman), thrombotic changes (in 1 woman), blood clots (in 1 woman) and cerebral infarction with a clot (in 1 man).

To date, a total of 19 people (74 men and 40 women) have died after vaccination against COVID-34. Not all table deaths are actually related to the administration of the preparation. They are classified as vaccine reactions due to the short time after vaccination. However, the table includes, for example, head injuries or other random events.

Side effects after vaccination – division into producers. Which vaccine was the most popular?

We asked the Ministry of Health and the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate to provide information that will allow us to determine which vaccine against COVID-19 was followed by the most serious and severe postvaccination reactions.

Unfortunately, the data obtained at the moment do not allow for the calculation of exact proportions, but they can be used to make at least preliminary estimates. The latest information provided to Medonet by the Ministry of Health shows that so far the volunteers have received:

  1. AstraZeneca: 2 million 472 thousand 543 first doses, 461 thousand. 418 second doses
  2. Johnson & Johnson: 272 thous. 295 first doses, 128 second doses (we don’t know why the second dose was given, although it is a single dose vaccine)
  3. Modern: 1 million 283 thousand 152 first doses, 327 thousand. 671 second doses
  4. Do: 7 million 943 thousand 629 first doses, 3 million 755 thousand. 557 second doses
  5. Not established: 23 thousand 092 First Doses, 1 Second Dose (this is the column that is completed for corrections by vaccination points)

Last week, the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate provided Medonet with a table with undesirable post-vaccination reactions with a breakdown by producers of the preparation. It showed that:

  1. After the vaccine Pfizer a total of 3067 adverse vaccine events occurred. 2461 was mild, 478 was serious, and 128 was severe
  2. After the vaccine Modern there were 477 adverse vaccine reactions, of which 411 were mild, 58 serious and 8 severe
  3. After the vaccine With AstraZeneca a total of 3888 adverse vaccine events occurred. 3394 were mild, 451 were serious, and 43 were severe
  4. After the vaccine Johnson & Johnson a total of 67 adverse vaccine events occurred. 56 was mild, 9 was serious, and 2 was severe

Due to the fact that the data is from last week, while the number of vaccinations performed is up-to-date, it is not possible to make an error-free calculation. As an estimate, however, if we add the first and second doses of the vaccines together, we can determine how roughly the percentages of serious and severe NOPs are distributed.

The highest number of adverse reactions after vaccination, i.e. approximately 0,0168%. has been reported following administration of AstraZeneki. This is four times more often than after Moderna or Johnson & Johnson, and 3,2 times more often than after Pfizer. However, statistically serious and severe vaccine reactions are very rare.
