Coronavirus: is this the end of more mutations?

In an interview with the abczdrowie.pl portal, prof. Robert Flisiak (Medical University of Bialystok) and prof. Maciej Kurpisz (Polish Society of Epidemiologists and Doctors of Infectious Diseases) explain that due to the increasing number of vaccinated people, the virus has less room for maneuver when it comes to subsequent mutations. Experts believe the virus will move towards more contagion but will keep getting weaker.

As an example, they give the Delta variant, which is highly infectious but less virulent, i.e. less able to penetrate, multiply and damage the tissues of the infected organism.

Prof. Maciej Kurpisz, head of the Department of Reproductive Biology and Stem Cells of the Polish Academy of Sciences, explains that in the event of a pandemic, the first wave is the hardest as it affects those most at risk of serious illness and often requires hospitalization. Prof. Kurpisz argues that the COVID-19 mutation cycle shows that the virus is clearly heading towards weakness.

The coronavirus is not going to go away completely

– Brutally speaking, the virus dies with the host. So the most virulent variants of SARS-CoV-2 just aren’t carried forward. It is different with the mild variants that do not cause the severe course of the disease. They can spread freely to other vectors – explains Prof. Kurpisz portal abczdrowie.pl.

Experts predict that the virus will continue to evolve and probably will not disappear completely, but in about five years it may weaken enough to be classified as a common cold virus. The end of the pandemic is not near, however, as the waves of infection will continue to occur, but each subsequent one should be weaker than the previous one.
