The appearance of the period, or menstruation, is a signal that the young girl is sexually mature. This means that she is able to get pregnant. Its length is an individual matter. However, it always consists of successive phases of changes that are designed to prepare the woman’s body for fertilization of the egg and pregnancy. How long is the period? How long are the different phases of the menstrual cycle?
Period is a colloquial term for bleeding that occurs during the menstrual cycle (including ovulation or menstrual bleeding). The period is the result of fluctuations in hormone levels, mainly estrogen and progesterone. The length of the period itself is an individual matter. How long the period lasts depends, among others from the age of the woman.
How long is the period? – menstrual cycle
Period is an important factor in women’s health. Its task is to cleanse the woman’s genital tract when she is not fertilized.
The entire menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days and is determined by the level of hormones that can have a significant impact on the emotions and well-being of a woman. The cycle consists of the following successive phases:
- the period (1-5 day of the cycle) is the first phase of the entire cycle. The first day of your period is also the first day of your menstrual cycle;
- follicular phase (day 6-13 of the cycle) – this is the phase usually where the period ends. The pain and any other discomforts associated with menstruation are also gone. It is also a fertile time when the probability of pregnancy is very high;
- ovulation (day 14 of the cycle) – during this time the follicle ruptures and an egg is released. This is the best moment if a couple is trying to have a baby;
- luteal phase (day 15-28 of the cycle) – estrogen levels are still high. It is possible to get pregnant for about 2 more days. The woman feels sluggish at this time, but she feels good. Estrogen levels drop, PMS appears, i.e. irritability and other symptoms suggesting the upcoming period.
It is assumed that the menstrual cycle lasts 28 days, but especially in young girls, the period may last from 21 to 35 days. It is a very individual matter.
If we want to check whether we have hormonal disorders, we can perform a package of tests including, among others estrogen, progesterone, prolactin or androgens.

The first period occurs in girls between the ages of 11 and 16. Initially, it is usually irregular, but with the duration of the cycle and the menstruation itself, it normalizes. This makes it easy to predict when your period will arise. At first, the bleeding is also not very heavy, which also changes with age.
