How long do you have to wait for an appointment with a specialist at the National Health Fund? We check

How long do you have to wait in Poland for an appointment with a specialist in a public health facility? What is the waiting time for basic diagnostic tests? It seems to be a bit better than it used to be, but there are still absurd terms in the search engine for treatments reimbursed by the National Health Fund. In one facility in the province Mazowieckie, you have to wait for an appointment with an endocrinologist until August 2027.

  1. We checked in the NFZ search engine what the waiting time for an appointment with a gynecologist, dermatologist, allergist, endocrinologist, cardiologist and orthopedist looks like in five provinces
  2. The fewest terms are to the gynecological clinic, but at the same time – on average – the waiting time is the shortest
  3. The longest lines are with the endocrinologist. You have to wait over 5 years for the next visit in Grodzisk Mazowiecki
  4. Another record concerns cataract surgery – in one of Warsaw’s hospitals, the next available date is in 2033.
  5. More such information can be found on the Onet homepage

From 1 July last year, the limits for specialist doctors were lifted. This is one of the assumptions of the Polish Deal. According to the government’s assurances, this was supposed to ease the queues and provide patients with a shorter waiting period for an appointment. Is it really? The «WHC Barometer, or the Report on changes in the availability of guaranteed health services», published in September, showed that in that period «the waiting time for services under the National Health Fund is shorter than it was at the beginning of 2019»

And what are the lines like in a few months after the lifting of the limits and a few days after the New Year? We checked the dates of visits to specialists (allergist, cardiologist, endocrinologist, gynecologist, orthopedist and dermatologist), procedures (cataracts and endoprostheses) and diagnostic tests using appropriate search engines.

A visit to a specialist – how long do you have to wait?

The Guide on Treatment Terms, launched in 2018 by the National Fund, allows you to find the closest appointment at a specific specialization clinic in a given province or city. In some search results, we will also find additional information about how many people are waiting in the queue for a specific facility and what is the average waiting time for an appointment.

  1. Which doctors have the longest queues? We have the latest report

However, the search engine is not perfect. Not all branches regularly update the data, which is why there are free dates in the days gone by. We have disregarded these results. It should also be remembered that finding a free term in the search engine does not guarantee 100%. successfully signing up for this date.
