Omicron – how long do symptoms last?

The Omikron variant, which completely dominates infections in many countries, is becoming more and more common in Poland. It is already responsible for 25 percent. new infections in our country, officially detected 1 thousand. 351 cases, but in practice there are many more. The symptoms are not specific, they are included in the catalog of symptoms observed in the previous variants. It is mainly a runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing, sore or scratchy throat.

When do Omicron symptoms appear?

The fact that Omikron is spreading so quickly and instantly has dominated coronavirus cases in many countries is not just a question of increased contagiousness. The new variant also has a shorter incubation period. In the case of the original Wuhan coronavirus, it took up to six days from the infection to the onset of symptoms. The Delta variant shows symptoms four days after infection, in the case of Omikron it is even shorter.

This is confirmed, for example, by recent studies carried out by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the microbiology department of the University Hospital in Oslo. It was checked how quickly Omikron can spread between people as a starting point by taking Christmas gatherings.

The study showed that there is a three-day ‘window’ between exposure to the virus and experiencing symptoms of the Omikron variant.

This period may be even shorter, as mentioned in an interview with Medonet by prof. Andrzej Fal.

– We know that in the case of the Delta variant, it takes about five days from the time of infection to the appearance of symptoms. However, from what we know about Omikron, the incubation is shorter, it is from one to three days, counting from contact with the virus – explained the president of the Polish Society of Public Health.

It should be noted, however, that an infected person begins to infect even before they develop symptoms. In the case of Omikron, it happens as early as 24 hours after contact with the virus carrier. This means that an infected person is a potential threat to others as early as two days before symptoms appear and continues for around 7-10 days of infection.

Omicron – the most common symptoms

The new variant of the coronavirus has no specific symptoms, mostly similar to those found in Alpha or Delta infections. In total, symptoms of Omikron infection can be even several dozen. However, much more often than in the case of Delta, scratchy throat, night sweats and severe exhaustion are mentioned.

The mild course of the disease makes it easy to confuse it with the common cold. Important! A slight course of infection with Omikron concerns mainly those who are vaccinated, preferably with three doses.
