The coronavirus still hides many secrets from us. Scientists, however, continue their efforts to reduce the number of unknowns. Researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center (USA) have just discovered that SARS-CoV-2 tricks our immune system, allowing it to easily enter the body. How does he do it?
The study by scientists from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio is published in the scientific journal “Nature Communications”
Scientists have determined that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus uses camouflage. Thanks to him, cells consider his genetic material as their own. Effect? Our immune system does not respond to the virus, which allows it to enter cells unnoticed and infect them.
Scientists compare this strategy to a situation in which a thief does not have to break into a building he wants to rob, because he simply knows the access code that deactivates the alarm.
For the coronavirus, this code is an enzyme it produces called nsp16. Scientists have found that SARS-CoV-2 uses it – along with the nsp10 enzyme – to modify the end of its genetic material, which contains a recipe for viral proteins. This adaptation causes the mRNA of the virus to be seen by the body as its own.
The discovery will help develop drugs for COVID-19
Scientists believe that the results of their research pave the way for the development of new antiviral drugs against COVID-19 and other infections caused by coronaviruses. These measures would stop the nsp16 enzyme from modifying the genetic material of the virus. This would allow the immune system to easily identify him as foreign and take action to fight him.
To date, the coronavirus has infected nearly 16,5 million people worldwide. Almost 653 died Over 10 million patients have managed to combat the disease.
- COVID-19 Coronavirus Coverage – Current Data
To reduce the risk of contact with the coronavirus, you need to follow a few rules – very simple. Wash your hands with soap and water for approx. 20-30 seconds (or, if it is impossible, with disinfectant liquid), wear masks, keep a distance (1,5-2 meters), avoid crowds, lead a healthy lifestyle – be physically active, get enough sleep, eat right, avoid smoking.
