COVID-19 is a disease that causes a wide variety of symptoms in those infected with the virus. Already at the beginning of the pandemic, there were several dozen possible symptoms. Today, as more mutations occur, the most common symptoms are different than at the beginning of the pandemic. Which are the most common now? This is what we learn from the ZOE Covid Symptom Study application.
- The Wuhan virus manifested itself mainly in cough, fever or loss of smell and taste
- In the case of the Alpha variant, muscle or throat pain was more often observed
- The Delta variant, which is also dominant in Poland, manifests itself, inter alia, in through food ailments. Hearing loss is also an important symptom. This one could be permanent

What symptoms of COVID-19 were most common at the start of the pandemic?
COVID-19 is a disease that can cause a wide variety of symptoms. The list of symptoms includes dozens of various ailments, from persistent cough and fever, through brain fog or covid fingers, to loss of smell and taste.
We learn about the symptoms of infected people not only from doctors, but also from ZOE Covid Symptom Studies. It is an application that allows infected and healed people to report symptoms that they have experienced.
The most common symptoms of Wuhan coronavirus were fever, fatigue, cough, and loss of sense of smell and taste. When the alpha (British) variant became the dominant mutation, sore throat or muscle soreness was more common among symptoms than loss of smell. However, fever was still characteristic, as well as cough and fatigue.
These COVID-19 symptoms are the most common now
The Alpha variant became dominant in Europe at the beginning of this year. He was responsible for the third wave of the pandemic in Poland. Currently, however, Europe has to deal with another mutation of the coronavirus – the Delta variant. And the virus originating in India produces symptoms that are easy to classify as a cold or gastrointestinal discomfort.
Currently, in addition to cough, fever and muscle pain, COVID-19 infection can manifest itself, for example, with a runny nose. Moreover, the body temperature does not always rise in those who are infected.
– In our application, the most frequently recorded symptoms were headache, runny nose, sneezing, fatigue, sore throat, which for many people will seem to be a common cold – said Prof. Tim Spector, coordinator of the ZOE Covid Symptom Study project.
Characteristic symptoms of infection with the Delta variant are also rash, stomach upset, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and red eyes. Doctors in India extend this list of symptoms to hearing impairment, severe tonsillitis, and blood clots that can lead to tissue death and gangrene, and ultimately to amputation of the limbs.
Hearing disorders may be preceded by tonsillitis. The disturbing information is that in the case of this symptom, the changes do not disappear after suffering from the disease. Hearing loss is therefore one of the symptoms of COVID-19’s ‘long tail’.

Symptoms of COVID-19 in Vaccinated People. What happens when they become infected with the Delta variant?
None of the available COVID-19 vaccines guarantee 100%. protection against coronavirus infection. However, if the vaccinated person becomes ill, the symptoms are usually milder. In addition, the list is different than for the unvaccinated.
Among people who have taken only one dose of the preparation against COVID-19, the most common symptoms of infection with the Delta variant are headache and throat pain, cough, runny nose, and persistent sneezing.
In fully vaccinated people, the Delta variant causes the same symptoms, but usually less severe. However, a common element for fully and partially vaccinated people is sneezing. This is the most common symptom of COVID-19 infection after taking the preparation.
