How effective is vodka antiseptic

Due to the shortage of antiseptics against the background of quarantine due to coronavirus, people are trying to prepare substitutes for pharmaceutical products. One of them is a vodka-based antiseptic.

However, experts do not confirm the effectiveness of this home antiseptic. The our country edition of Facts spoke with the doctor of medical sciences, epidemiologist Alla Mironenko. Here is what she said about the mandatory composition of the antiseptic: “70% alcohol should be used. In vodka, the degree is less – only 40%. Manufacturers of ready-made antiseptics compensate for the lower alcohol content with other components. I would not recommend preparing vodka-based antiseptics. The bacteria are 70% sensitive to alcohol. Vodka-based antiseptics won’t protect you. ”

Vadim Aristov, an infectious disease specialist and change management consultant, spoke about the adequate replacement of alcohol in the antiseptic: “You can use chlorhexidine instead of alcohol in antiseptics, but always XNUMX%.”
