It seems that – at least for now – the wave of frosts is ending. In a few days it will be a few degrees above zero, and in a week – even a dozen or so. How does warming affect viruses? Can we feel more secure? Will the coronavirus now “let go”? We asked the virologist Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski from the Medical University of Warsaw.

Contrary to what many of us believe, low temperatures do not harm viruses, including coronavirus. It is exactly the opposite. The recent frost is conducive to both the most popular viruses, such as the influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2. It is enough to look at when we most often fall ill.
In winter, we spend more time indoors, often poorly ventilated, so the chances of spreading pathogens are much greater. The human factor is therefore decisive.
Some time ago, the World Health Organization officially announced that the coronavirus spreads at all temperatures, and there is no reason to believe that the cold is killing it. The latest data on the number of infections in Poland fully confirm this. The frosty February did not improve the statistics at all – it is even worse than we could have expected.

According to forecasters, warming is coming. In a week it will be even a dozen or so degrees above zero. How might such a change affect viruses?
– This change does not affect viruses in any way. It only affects our immune system, because it does not like weather fluctuations and this facilitates the activity of viruses. And the viruses themselves will not do better or worse, both group viruses and coronaviruses – says Dr. Tomasz Dzieścitkowski, a virologist.
- What stage of the COVID-19 epidemic are we at? The R index in Poland – the latest data
– The same goes for bacteria. Pathogenic bacteria replicate at body temperature and are kept frozen, so they are not affected in any way. Temperatures much higher, above 60 degrees Celsius, may affect – adds Dzieścitkowski.
The expert recommends that despite the approaching warming, be as careful as before.
