How does Postinor work? Does Postinor have side effects? What can I expect from taking Postinor? What should worry you and when to see a doctor? Could Postinor affect a woman’s fertility in the future? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
How does Postinor work?
Hello, my name is Anna and I am 24 years old. I had intercourse with my current partner, but our method of contraception failed – the condom broke during intercourse. I don’t want to get pregnant at this point, so I went to the doctor and got one prescription for Postinor. I took Postinor about 16 hours after intercourse and so far nothing is happening. However, I did not have time to thoroughly read the effects of these tablets 72 hours after. Hence my question – how does Postinor work?
I cannot find exact information on this subject, and I would like to know the exact one actions of Postinor. I am also wondering if Postinor has any side effects? And if so, what are they about? side effects of Postinor and what should I be prepared for? Are there any symptoms that I should find disturbing and then go to the gynecologist again? I am a bit worried about how Postinor works and how it will affect my body. Will the action of Postinor affect my fertility in the future? Thank you in advance for all the information about how Postinor works.
The doctor explains how Postinor works
W composition of Postinor enters levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic prostagen that shows a similar effect to progesterone in the female body, but more selective. It works through many different mechanisms to help prevent pregnancy. First of all, it inhibits ovulation (if it hasn’t happened yet) by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary, so fertilization cannot take place. It also influences the composition of the cervical mucus, thickening it, which creates a barrier to sperm migration in the reproductive tract. It also causes changes in the uterine mucosa, blocking any blastocyst from attaching to it. The tablet is absorbed quickly from the gastrointestinal tract, in about 2 hours.
The most common side effects include gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, but also dizziness and headache, migraine, allergic reactions, breast pain and tenderness. Vaginal side effects may also include symptoms such as more or less heavy menstrual bleeding or spotting between periods.
Keep in mind that monthly bleeding it may occur about a week earlier or be late. However, if your period is delayed by more than one week, you should contact your Gynecologist. Also, if any of the above-mentioned symptoms turns out to be serious and severe or lasts too long, you should also contact your Gynecologist. Side effects, if they appear, should not last longer than a few days.
You should also consider using other methods of contraception than condoms during your next visit to the gynecologist. The effectiveness of a contraceptive method can be measured objectively using the Pearl Index, i.e. the number of unintentional conceptions to the number of women using a given method for a year. So, if the Pearl index is 3, it means that 3 out of 100 women using a given method of contraception become pregnant despite using it correctly. The most effective method of contraception is the combined contraceptive pill with a Pearl Index of 0.1-0.9, i.e. 1-9 women out of 1000 using the contraceptive pill become pregnant. For comparison, the Pearl Index for a condom is 2-12, and for Natural Family Planning methods is 0.8-3.
