E-prescription is a relatively new solution introduced in Poland at the beginning of 2020, which replaced the traditional paper prescription. Can a doctor also issue an e-prescription during a TV visit? We check not only what the process looks like, but also why e-prescriptions are a better solution than a printed document.
Why have e-prescriptions replaced paper prescriptions?
An electronic prescription, also known as an e-prescription, has replaced the traditional prescription written by a doctor. It was introduced on January 8, 2020. The e-prescription covers the entire IT system that aims to collect information about the medications dispensed to patients. This is a good solution for patients who will receive prescriptions for higher doses of drugs. They do not have to worry about losing the refund. The e-prescription can be dispensed at any pharmacy of your choice.
In addition, an electronic document is much more readable than a traditionally written prescription. Thus, the pharmacist executing the order will not confuse the names of the drugs. The patient also does not have the possibility of losing the prescription, because all data is saved on his online account (Internet Patient Account) if he was treated under the National Health Fund. The condition for having IKP is creating a Trusted Profile.

E-prescriptions – why are they important for doctors?
The e-prescription is not only a convenience for patients, but also for doctors who, with the patient’s consent, can track their medical history on the basis of data from the system. Thanks to this, they know what the patient’s treatment looked like, including what medications he has taken so far.
Who can issue an e-prescription?
An electronic prescription (as in the case of a traditionally written prescription) can be issued by:
- Doctor;
- Dentist;
- Nurse;
- Midwife;
- Felczer;
- Senior medical assistant.
A person authorized to issue an electronic prescription must have an account in the IT system, which also receives e-prescriptions.
Issuing an e-prescription during a TV visit – what does it look like?
During the TV visit, the doctor talking to the patient may ask about the previously taken medications and the medical history. The patient may consent to the viewing of this information in his online account. Before ending the conversation, the doctor issues an e-prescription with the names of the drugs and information about taking them. He discusses with the patient their dosage and possible side effects.
The date of the patient’s next visit to the doctor may also appear on the e-prescription.
How does the patient get access to the e-prescription?
The patient can receive an e-prescription in the form of a pdf file sent to the e-mail address. It is also possible to receive an SMS to the indicated telephone number with a 4-digit code. The e-prescription will also be available on the Patient’s Internet Account.

How to redeem an e-prescription issued during an e-visit?
If you receive an e-prescription via SMS, the pharmacist must provide not only the 4-digit code, but also the PESEL number (yours or the person for whom you are filling the e-prescription). If you receive a pdf file it will contain a barcode. All you have to do is show it to a pharmacist who will scan it. The prescription information appears on his computer. The pdf file can also be printed.
You will receive it during the TV screening. Use the haloDoctor platform to make an appointment with your doctor and get an e-prescription in a few simple steps, or you can schedule a free remote GP consultation. E-release and e-referral issued during the e-visit
During the teleconsultation, the doctor may not only issue an e-prescription, but also an e-leave, which will be delivered directly to the employer, as well as an e-referral.
