Drinking alcohol does not provide any health benefits to anyone under the age of 40. However, the research of scientists brings surprising news for those in their forties. Small amounts of alcohol at this age can reduce the risk of certain diseases.
- When you look at the cumulative health effects, especially among the elderly, you can see that little alcohol is better than no drinking, explains the US expert
- This does not absolutely mean drinking alcohol in the interest of potential health benefits
- The study found that drinking alcohol did not provide any health benefits for those under the age of 40. However, it increases the risk of, for example, road accidents, suicides or homicides

“When you look at the cumulative health effects, especially among the elderly, you can see that little alcohol is better than not drinking” — says, quoted by CNN, prof. Emmanuela Gakidou from the University of Washington’s School of Medicine.
Of course, no one should drink alcohol to obtain potential health benefits, and some people should not drink alcohol at all.

Effects of drinking alcohol before the age of 40. The research results
Scientists analyzed data on deaths of people aged 15-95 from 204 countries of the world in the last 30 years. This information was collected through a global study of the burden of disease, injury and risk factors.
Often a small amount of alcohol drunk affects human behavior. In the first place, its “victims” fall on the part of the brain responsible for precise thinking, logical reasoning and correct judgment. However, these are not the only effects of its operation. Alcohol can cause things like:
- obesity
- heart and liver problems
- depression
- hard to heal fractures
- decreased immunity
- insomnia
- memory impairment
- erection problems
- genetic defects in the case of the fetus
These studies show that in 2020 alone, 1,34 billion people worldwide were consuming harmful amounts of alcohol. Almost 60 percent of them are people up to the age of 39 inclusive and at the same time over 66 percent. of them are men. The study found that drinking alcohol did not provide any health benefits for those under the age of 40. Instead, it increases the risk of injuries such as car accidents, suicides and homicides.
Some experts not involved in the study expressed concern about the conclusions. “We know that all the purported health benefits of drinking alcohol for the heart and circulation are outweighed by the increased risk of other health conditions such as cancer, liver disease, depression and dementia,” emphasized Dr. Tony Rao, of the King’s College Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience London.
One can only speak of a low-risk quantity. The American guidelines say a maximum of one drink a day for women and a maximum of two drinks for men. A standard drink is usually defined as:
12 ounces (or 0,36 liters) of regular beer (5% alcohol).
5 ounces (approximately 150 ml) of wine (12% alcohol).
1,5 oz (45 ml) of distilled spirit (approximately 40% alcohol).
