Most of us are not very efficient. 33% of men and women say they often miss their next paycheck*. But at the same time, almost a quarter carry more money than they plan to spend in the store, and 27% buy things that turn out to be unnecessary. Why are we doing this? “Women are more likely to buy clothes and jewelry, while men are more likely to buy larger items (high-quality electronics, computers, etc.,” explains psychoanalyst Marie-Claude François-Laugier. – Such purchases are rich in symbolic meanings: women unconsciously strive to confirm their feminine identity, men – to feel strength and power. In both cases, there is a desire to correct the wrong (as it seems to us) self-image: by making unreasonable purchases, we seem to become someone else – better, more worthy of admiration and love. This need for recognition is also evident in those who spend money on expensive gifts for their environment to satisfy their narcissism.
