The number of schizophrenics in the world is constantly growing. If we correlate this number to the total number of all inhabitants of the planet, then it will be 1-2%. The worst thing is that scientists have not been able to establish the final cause of the development of mental illness. According to recent data, it is believed that genetics is responsible for this. But it has not yet been possible to establish what kind of gene this is.
The disease is accompanied by the disintegration of thought processes and emotional instability. More than half of all patients have a disability. This applies to those who did not start therapy in a timely manner, but started the disease. To achieve remission in this case is almost impossible. It is terrible that ordinary people often perceive schizophrenics as people of the lower class who have no place in society. To understand why patients behave strangely and how they fight for their survival in the world, they need to get to know them better.
How the disease appears based on the stories of real patients
The symptoms of schizophrenia are very pronounced. A person begins to see what others do not see and hear voices in his head, respond to them. From the outside, it looks like a person is communicating with someone invisible.
On the example of stories from the lives of real people diagnosed with schizophrenia, you can see how this type of mental disorder appears:
- “Even in my youth, I was hit hard on the head, there was a concussion. Immediately after that, a feeling of intense excitement and anxiety appeared inside. Of course, I did not go to the hospital, because after the injury, I decided that this was a normal condition. Then there was the army. Returned home, addicted to alcohol. It was from this moment that the first symptoms of schizophrenia appeared. It’s a strange feeling, but my head was a complete mess. Thoughts just ran one after another, but in an instant there was absolute emptiness in my head. Then it got worse: paranoia set in. All the time it seemed that they were following me, they wanted to harm me. When I drank, I generally tried not to think about my condition. Denied the fact that I was sick. Over time, things only got worse, so I had to stop drinking and start therapy in the clinic.”
- “When the first symptoms started, I was 20 years old. I was an athlete, I played football, I was strong and hardy. Suddenly I started to feel a loss of energy. I decided that I needed to increase the load. Then his head began to ache as if an ax had been thrust into it. This pain kept around the clock. I didn’t even notice how I stopped understanding people’s speech, my thoughts got confused. When I decided to walk across the frozen reservoir to Moscow, thinking that this was what would heal me, it became clear that something was wrong with me.
The main cause of the disease is genetic predisposition.
Examples of patients with voices in their heads
Auditory hallucinations are one of the first and most striking signs of the disease. Here is how patients describe it:
- “I stopped riding buses because people around me can read my mind. It happens that I read a book, and then the voice in my head says that I need to go back, because something has changed on one of the pages.
- “Voices around can appear at any time of the day or night. Sometimes it happened that I woke up because of them. Of course, I try not to listen, but then they start screaming. It’s unbearable. You have to listen to them and answer them so that they calm down a little. Thus, I involuntarily surrender to my illness.”
Along with auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations often appear. As you can see, people did not choose this path. They are sick in the same way as patients with physical diseases: cancer, SARS, inflammation and others.
