How do I get my sweater back in shape after washing?
A sweater is a comfortable and cozy thing that is especially helpful in frosty weather. This garment requires special care, because improper washing or drying can irreparably spoil its beauty. If the thing still has lost its shape, do not rush to throw it away – it may still be possible to fix it.
Reconstructing a stretched sweater
Improper wearing, such as constantly pulling on the hem or sleeves, can cause the sweater to stretch significantly. Warm water will help to regain its former shape. Wash the garment in it using a mild detergent suitable for the fabric of the sweater. Then lightly squeeze it with your hands, wrap it in a towel, and then spread it on a flat surface until it dries completely.
In the case when some part of the sweater is stretched, for example, the sleeves, you only need to soak them in warm water, otherwise you can ruin the thing. If the sweater is larger than 1 size, the water temperature should be increased.
Reconstructing a shrunken sweater
What if your favorite cotton or wool sweater has shrunk by one or more sizes? In this case, carefully examine the damaged item. If the sweater after washing not only decreased in size, but also turned into a shapeless mass, nothing can help it. But if the product has become small by only one size, you can try to return it to its former shape with the help of improvised means:
- cool water
- fabric softener
- terry towel
- soap
- ammonia
- turpentine
First, pour water into the basin, the temperature of which does not exceed 30 ° C. Add a mild conditioner suitable for the fabric that is sewn or knitted. Place a clean sweater in a basin and rinse for 5 minutes. Then gently wring out with your hands, without twisting, and wrap the sweater in a terry towel for a couple of minutes. Then spread it out on a horizontal surface covered with a dry terry towel. Until the sweater is dry, periodically stretch it gently to the desired size. In this case, it is important not to get carried away, otherwise you can deform the shape of the product.
You can effectively stretch a thing on yourself. True, this method is not very pleasant, because you will have to wear a wet product.
If a cotton, synthetic, or woolen sweater shrinks after washing, you can try to restore its shape with a special solution. To do this, dilute in 10 liters of a weak soap solution 3 tbsp. tablespoons of ammonia and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of turpentine. Put a shrunken sweater in the solution and let it sit for 24 hours. After the allotted time, rinse the garment in clean water with the addition of a suitable conditioner and pull it slightly while drying as described above.
