What are vaccinated children aged 5–11?

Children receive the Comirnaty vaccine from Pfizer / BioNTech. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended approval of the preparation for children aged 5-11 years on November 30. The EMA then sent its recommendation to the European Commission, which made a final decision on the matter.

Why Pfizer? The Agency decided that Comirnata’s benefits in children 5-11 years of age are greater than its risks, especially for diseases that put them at risk of developing severe COVID-19.

How much of the COVID-19 vaccine will be given to children?

It will be lower than that used in adults and older children (over 12 years of age) and will amount to 10 µg.

As reported by the EMA, «a main study in children between 5 and 11 years of age showed that the immune response to Comirnaty, given at the lower dose (10 µg) in this age group, was comparable to that observed with the higher dose (30 µg) in the elderly aged 16–25 (based on anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels). This means that in the study, the vaccine was 90,7 percent. effective in the prevention of symptomatic COVID-19. Although the actual rate could have been from 67,7 percent. up to 98,3 percent ».

When will a child aged 5-11 get the second dose of the vaccine?

The vaccination schedule is similar to that for adolescents. The second dose is to be given at the earliest three weeks after the first.

Is it worth vaccinating a child against COVID-19?

Prof. Magdalena Marczyńska, a specialist in childhood infectious diseases, points to another positive aspect of childhood immunization. «This will help to stabilize the work of schools and family life, but it may also eventually cut the chain of infections. Here, too, parents should get vaccinated in a greater percentage. However, each subsequent vaccinated person in the population accelerates the end of this pandemic »- he argues.
