How deep to plant tulips
Novice gardeners are often interested in how deep to plant tulips. The answer to this question largely depends on the diameter of the bulb.
First of all, you need to find a good place for the flower garden. And the best will be the most illuminated area, closed from drafts. Crops do not impose special requirements on the soil, but they prefer light, fertile, loamy or sandy soils. It is important that the flowerbed is not located in the lowlands, because tulips cannot stand moisture stagnation.
How deep to plant tulips depends on the diameter of the bulb
It is advisable to fertilize the soil before planting. To do this, 2 weeks before work, dig the area to a depth of the bayonet of a shovel and add 15 kg of rotted manure or compost for each square meter. It is equally important to prepare the bulbs for planting. To do this, they need to be held for half an hour in a solution of potassium permanganate. And also treatment with a growth stimulant, for example, “Epinom”, will not be superfluous.
Planting depth of tulip bulbs
For flowers, dig holes or trenches. Their depth is equal to three diameters of the bulb. As a rule, for large flowers, 15 cm is enough. For smaller flowers, 8-10 cm is enough. It should be borne in mind that it is better to plant large flowers in the middle of the flower bed, and small ones at the edges. Then the composition looks more harmonious.
Tulips should be placed in holes and in no case should they be pressed into the ground.
So that the flowers do not interfere with each other, it is advisable to maintain a distance of 10 cm between them. Small bulbs can be planted at a distance of 5-8 cm. If you are planting different varieties of flowers, then it is better to make a gap of 20 cm between groups. This will make it easier for yourself to care for them.
Be sure to level the area after planting. This is necessary so that moisture does not stagnate in the recesses. And in the future, plants need to be cared for:
- If the fall is dry, water the flower bed 10 days after planting.
- Loosen the soil with the arrival of spring. This will improve air access to the bulbs.
- Water the plants regularly but moderately.
- After the first shoots appear, feed the tulips with nitrogen fertilizers.
- When tying buds, it is advisable to add potassium-phosphorus preparations. The same fertilizers are needed during the flowering period.
- The flowers should be dug up annually. This event should be carried out after the leaves turn yellow.
It is not difficult to grow tulips on a personal plot, because they are not capricious. It is enough to provide the crops with proper planting and care, and they will delight you with friendly flowering for a long time.
