The BA.2 sub-variant of the Omikron coronavirus variant, which is spreading rapidly, especially in Denmark, does not “cause a more serious form” of COVID-19 than the BA.1 variant, World Health Organization (WHO) epidemic expert Maria Van Kerkhove said on Tuesday.

Sub-option BA.2

“We do not see a difference in the severity of the disease between BA.1 versus BA.2, so this is a similar level in terms of the risk of hospitalization,” assured Kerkhove.

She stressed that such conclusions “are really important because in many countries there are significant numbers of infections with both BA.1 and BA.2”.

The first samples containing BA.2 were tested in the Philippines last month, but it is still unclear where the sub-variant first appeared.

According to WHO, the Omikron variant is divided into three sub-variants – BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3.
