American and Spanish scientists have proven the benefits of coffee in the fight against obesity. They claim that the caffeine contained in the drink is able to compensate for the negative effects of poor nutrition, as it slows down the deposition of lipids and lowers triglycerides. The findings of their study were published in the Journal of Functional Foods.
“In a study on rats, researchers at the University of Illinois found that caffeine limits weight gain and cholesterol production, despite a diet high in fat and sugar,” – said in a press release.
Experts noticed that rats received caffeine from mat for four weeks and gained 16 percent less body weight and 22 percent less fat compared to rodents that did not have caffeine in their diet. According to the conditions of the experiment, the diet of rats consisted of 40 percent fat, 45 percent – carbohydrates and 15 percent – protein.
According to the study, the amount of caffeine in one serving of mate ranges from 65-130 milligrams compared to 30-300 milligrams of caffeine in a cup of coffee, and the daily consumption of caffeine by rodents was equivalent to four cups of coffee per person.
Scientists note that a similar result can be obtained by replacing mate with synthetic caffeine or regular coffee. Experts believe that the results of their study will be useful for the prevention and control of overweight in humans.
