How and where to store sea kale correctly?

Seaweed is sold in a variety of forms. In each case, the storage conditions will be different. The simplest of these is the storage of the dried product. Such cabbage should be placed in a cool and dark place, and when opening the package, move it to a resealable container (a plastic bag is also suitable for storage, but it is better to use glass jars or containers).

Nuances of storing seaweed:

  • you can store sea kale only if the product is absolutely fresh (if there are the first signs of oxidation, mold or other factors indicating the spoilage of the cabbage, then you must refuse to store it, in addition, it is also not recommended to eat it);
  • canned seaweed should be stored only in closed containers (it is better to place the product in the refrigerator);
  • you can freeze seaweed in any package (cling film, plastic bags, containers, foil, plastic bags, etc.);
  • if seaweed was bought in a package in the form of a package, then after opening it, the product must be transferred to a container (in an open package, cabbage will not retain its freshness for a long time);
  • dried seaweed is not recommended to be stored in well-lit places (under the influence of light, kelp loses its beneficial properties, and under direct sunlight it can dry out too much and become unsuitable for human consumption);
  • if extraneous odors have appeared in the aroma of seaweed (applies to any type of kelp), then it is not worth storing it and it is also not recommended to eat it (most likely, the cabbage has already begun to deteriorate);
  • seaweed salads are best eaten immediately after opening the package or preparing them (some additional ingredients can speed up the oxidation process of seaweed);
  • if the kelp was bought dried and then cooked (but no additional ingredients were added), then after 1-2 days of storage in the refrigerator it can be frozen (the shelf life of such a product will be approximately 30 days, after which the cabbage must be eaten);
  • dried seaweed will better retain its useful and taste properties if placed in a cloth bag and stored in a dark place;
  • when storing dried seaweed, it is important to take into account the remoteness of the selected place from heat sources (for example, boxes located above a gas stove are not suitable for such purposes);
  • if the package with seaweed is opened, then the shelf life is counted from this moment, and it will no longer work to be guided by the date specified by the manufacturer.

If seaweed is stored in the freezer, then it should not be subjected to repeated freezing, like any product. Before placing cabbage in the freezer, it is better to pack it into separate portions.

How much and at what temperature to store seaweed

The shelf life of seaweed depends on the type in which this product was purchased. If cabbage is purchased in packages, then after opening them it should be eaten as soon as possible. The shelf life of the original taste properties in this case will be only a few days. The optimal storage temperature for seaweed (except for the dried type) is the range from +2 to +9 degrees. On average, the product is able to maintain freshness for 30-90 days.

Depending on the type of seaweed, its shelf life is:

  • the dried version is stored for 3 years from the date of packaging;
  • seaweed in containers is stored for 30 days (storage should be carried out only in the refrigerator);
  • seaweed with additional ingredients, for example, in the form of a salad or in a marinade, can keep freshness for 1 month (after opening the container, this period is significantly reduced);
  • frozen seaweed is stored for several months (if repeated frost is excluded).

Frozen seaweed can be stored for a long time, but after 30 days the product will begin to lose its beneficial properties. A similar situation is observed with dried cabbage. Given these facts, you should not store the product for the maximum period, it is better to eat it as early as possible.
