How and where to store papaya correctly?

If the papaya is purchased unripe, you can speed up the ripening process by using a banana. Fruits should be placed in one bag and tightly closed or tied. Almost within a day, the papaya will acquire a characteristic aroma and rich skin color. This method is not recommended if you plan to store the papaya for a long time. Ripe fruit will only stay juicy for a few days.

The nuances of storing papaya at home:

  • papaya is stored in the refrigerator for a long time, but if possible, it is better not to put the fruits in the cold (this method is best used only if absolutely necessary);
  • unripe papaya ripens well at home, but it must be stored at a certain temperature (the fruit will not ripen in the cold);
  • it is recommended not to store papaya in the refrigerator for more than three days (the fruit may be stored longer, but its taste will be violated);
  • in room conditions, it is better to store papaya in the coolest and darkest areas (the fruit will quickly deteriorate in the sun);
  • if the papaya is stored for the purpose of ripening, then the fruit must be periodically turned over;
  • papaya with damage, cracks or the first signs of decay cannot be stored (if the decay process has begun, then you should not eat such fruits either);
  • papaya with a rich skin color and elastic structure of the fruit should be eaten as soon as possible (with any storage method, such fruits will deteriorate quickly);
  • instead of paper, you can use regular newspaper to preserve papaya;
  • cut papaya should be stored only in the refrigerator (at room temperature, the pulp of the fruit will quickly acquire a soft consistency, and its taste will deteriorate);
  • to preserve sliced papaya, you can use cling film (condensation can accumulate in a plastic bag due to the presence of air, so it is better not to use this method);
  • ripe papaya has a rather soft consistency, therefore, it is impossible to place any fruits on top of it in any case (under such influence, dents will appear on the surface of the fruit, which will quickly turn into rotting spots);
  • chopped papaya can be placed in any container (the main thing is to be able to close the container with a lid).

Papaya is highly sensitive to low temperatures and their fluctuations. If you store the fruits indoors, then put them in the refrigerator and again in the room, then the fruit will deteriorate at a rapid pace.

How much and at what temperature to store papaya

The optimal temperature for storing papaya at home is considered to be no more than +10 degrees. Under these conditions, the fruit can retain its flavor properties for several weeks. The maximum shelf life of papaya can be achieved only if the air humidity is 85-90%, and the temperature is constantly maintained at +7 degrees.

In the refrigerator, papaya is stored for no longer than 7 days. Place the fruits in the fruit compartment, excluding their contact with other food products. It is especially not recommended to store papaya near bananas, which greatly accelerate the ripening process.

The ratio of temperature and shelf life of papaya:

  • from +21 to +27 degrees – 3 days (the papaya, which is stored for the purpose of ripening, will be stored longer);
  • +7 degrees – 20 days;
  • +10 degrees – 10-14 days;
  • +5 degrees – no longer than 7 days.

Papaya is not stored frozen. After exposure to low temperatures, these fruits lose their natural taste and vitamins. The consistency of the pulp also changes dramatically.
