Mango can be stored for a long time, but the degree of ripeness of the fruit plays a special role. It is better not to try to preserve overripe fruits even for several days. Numerous factors can affect the acceleration of the process of their decay, such as, for example, exposure to sunlight, contact with other fruits, temperature changes, improper packaging, etc.

The nuances of storing mango:

  • unripe mangoes should not be stored in the refrigerator (exposure to low temperatures will not allow the ripening processes to end, and instead of preserving freshness, rotting will begin);
  • the ripening process in room conditions for mango lasts 5-6 days (after this time, you can continue storing it, but already in the refrigerator);
  • freezing the whole mango is not recommended (the bones and skin must be removed);
  • you can try to preserve the appearance of the mango and prevent the appearance of wrinkles on its skin with a small amount of vegetable oil (use a brush to apply oil over the entire surface of the fruit, wait for the skin to dry, after which the fruit can be stored indoors or in the refrigerator);
  • if possible, ripe mango is best eaten a maximum of 2-3 days after purchase;
  • in the homeland of mango, these fruits are preserved in special ways, for example, if the fruits are soaked for several hours in salted water, then their shelf life will increase, and the pulp will become crispy;
  • if the mango is placed in direct sunlight, the fruit will not deteriorate, but dry out (this is one of the ways to store it), after which it can still be eaten (the taste and aroma will be preserved when exposed to the sun).

You can often hear the opinion that mango does not like the cold. You shouldn’t take such a rule literally. The fact is that unripe fruits of this variety most often end up on store shelves. If the mango is not ripe, then it really should not be stored in the refrigerator. Ripe fruit will spoil within a few days without sufficient refrigeration, so cold storage is imperative.

How much and at what temperature to store mangoes

The maximum shelf life for mangoes is 1 month. This indicator can be achieved if you take into account the rule: ripe fruit should be stored at a temperature of +10 degrees, and unripe – +13 degrees. It is possible to determine in advance how long a mango can be stored by the density of its skin. In this case, the denser the fruit, the longer it will retain its freshness, taste and consistency.

Mango keeps well frozen. For several months, under the influence of low temperatures, the mango pulp does not lose its juiciness and taste. Before freezing, the fruit is recommended to be peeled and rinsed thoroughly. Dry the pulp with a paper towel before packing. You can freeze fruits in plastic containers, cling film or plastic bags.

Mango is kept at room temperature for a maximum of 5-6 days. After this period, the pulp begins to rapidly become soft. Even if the fruit does not spoil, then its taste will already be spoiled. Storage location in room conditions does not play a significant role. The mango has a fairly strong skin, so a slight difference in temperature does not greatly affect the shelf life.
