How and where to store cashews correctly?
The main rule for storing cashews is to exclude the effects of heat on the nuts. This applies not only to their placement near heat sources, but also to the air temperature. If the temperature is too high, cashews will change their taste, become bitter and oily.
The nuances of storing cashews at home:
- it is necessary to store cashews in places with minimal illumination (light or rays of the sun accelerate the process of mold and changes in the taste of nuts);
- cashews can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer;
- you can store cashews in plastic bags only when they are frozen (it is imperative to release all the air from the bag, so it is more convenient to use cling film);
- any containers that can be closed with a lid are suitable for storing cashews (if you store cashews open, they will quickly become oily and start to taste bitter);
- in the refrigerator, cashews must be isolated from other food products (especially from smoked, salty foods and cooked dishes);
- you can store only cashews without the slightest signs of spoilage (the presence of oily, the first signs of decay, mold or damage by other fungi);
- it is recommended to remove damaged nuts or darkened kernels from the cashew mixture before storage (split nuts are stored less than whole kernels, so they can shorten the shelf life of the entire mixture);
- if cashews are sprinkled with salt, then they should be eaten as soon as possible (such nuts are not suitable for long-term storage);
- cashews can be stored in glass jars (it is recommended to sterilize the containers beforehand);
- during storage, cashews must not be mixed with other types of nuts (their shelf life may differ, so perishable varieties can accelerate the process of rotting of the entire mixture);
- shriveled cashews should be thrown away (the taste properties of such nuts are spoiled, and their use in food can harm health and digestion);
- if the nuts are wet, then they cannot be stored (meaning the accidental ingress of moisture, and not its appearance as a sign of spoilage);
- if cashews are bought in a package, then first you need to check its integrity (if you buy nuts in a damaged package, then they may already be spoiled, so they cannot be stored);
- if plaque or insects appear on the cashews during storage, then washing the nuts will not return their quality, it is better to get rid of them and not eat them.
You can extend the shelf life of cashews by heating. Place the nuts on a baking sheet and put in the oven for a while. The temperature should be at least 50 degrees, and the heating time should not exceed 20 minutes. This procedure is necessary to heat the cashews, not to fry them.
If cashews were bought in packaging, then they can be stored for the period specified by the manufacturer. After opening the package, the storage period is shortened. Transfer the nuts to any container and place them in a dark and cool place. If you store cashews in an open container, they will quickly deteriorate. After a week, their surface will become oily, and then the process of changing the taste characteristics will begin.
How much and at what temperature to store cashews
In a dark and cool place, cashews can be stored for up to a month. In this case, it is important to choose the right storage container. Any container with a lid is considered the best option.
Cashews are kept in the refrigerator for several months. By freezing, the shelf life can be extended up to a year. Temperature drops should not be allowed. Re-freezing the nuts is also not recommended. Otherwise, they can change their taste.
Cashews are stored in cloth bags for several months. However, in a container or glass jar, they retain their freshness longer and better. It is not necessary to place containers in the refrigerator. Room temperature does not shorten the shelf life of these nuts, but it is best to give preference to the coolest areas.
