On Holy Week, the last week before Easter, Thursday is called Clean. This year it falls on April 29th. It was on this day, according to legend, that at the Last Supper, Christ personally washed the feet of each of his disciples. From there the name went – Thursday became Clean.
However, as is usual in Russia, our Christian customs are closely intertwined with dense superstitions growing from centuries-old traditions. So, in the pre-Christian Slavic tradition, the pre-Easter days coincided with the glorification of the sun god Yaril and Lada – the goddess of love and family happiness. At this time, they celebrated the arrival of spring, the vernal equinox. The cleaning symbolized the cleaning of the home from the dark cold energy of winter.
That is why today many people combine morning prayer and throwing coins into the water to wash the floors, so that wealth will come.
What you really need to do on Easter days
Wash the windows. It is clear that since autumn the windows have become pretty dirty: it was raining and snowing, cars were dusting on the roads. The transparent air of spring must be met with transparent glasses, this is obvious. However, the Slavs attached a mystical meaning to the windows. No wonder the “window” comes from the “eye” – with its glass “eyes” the house looks at the outside world and exchanges impressions and energies with it according to the principle of feedback. That is, the energies both enter and exit through the window. Therefore, the cleanliness of the windows is a guarantee of a safe atmosphere in the house. They generally need to be washed as often as possible, rather than twice a year, as most of us do.
Wash curtains and bedding. The natural desire for freshness and purity in which we will meet the newly born Christ. Pagan notes here – again, the renewal of the energy at home.
Clean corners thoroughly. It is there that during the year dust accumulates, debris gets clogged and … evil spirits live. Wash, scrub and sprinkle with holy water!
Disassemble things, get rid of junk, cracked dishes, etc. Old things accumulate memories, and negative emotions can arise when looking at them. Easter is a renewal, so let it touch the household items as well.
Whitewash ceilings, paint walls and so on. Maybe this is not so relevant in our time of stretch ceilings and vinyl wallpaper. Previously, the ceilings were heavily smoked during the cold season, while the stoves were heated and candles were burned. If you are still whitewashing the ceiling, it is very good to motivate yourself for this unpleasant occupation with the imminent onset of a bright holiday!
